Black Myth: Wukong

The Best New Games of August 2024: Black Myth: Wukong

Let’s talk about the monkey in the room – the biggest release of the month and maybe even the year: Black Myth: Wukong. The game is a must-play for anyone who loves action RPGs with a touch of Chinese mythology. As the Destined One, you’ll immerse yourself in a world filled with ancient legends, explore breathtaking landscapes, and take on formidable enemies in epic battles. The game blends the best elements of Souls-like combat with the fluidity of games like God of War.

The visuals are nothing short of stunning. The combat system is brilliantly designed, with a satisfying dodge mechanic and various spells, transformations, and weapons to master. If you’re up for a challenge and appreciate a game that lets you forge your own path, Black Myth: Wukong is well worth the investment. It’s a game that delivers on almost every front, offering an unforgettable journey into the heart of Chinese mythology.

Cat Quest III

Set sail on an epic catventure in Cat Quest III, the latest entry in the beloved Cat Quest series! This time, you’ll be whiskered away to the pirate-themed world of the Purribean, where you play as a swashbuckling purrivateer on a quest to uncover the mythical Northern Star. In this vibrant 2.5D open-world action RPG, you’ll navigate treacherous waters and face off against hordes of Pi-rats under the command of the sinister Pirate King.

The game offers pawsome gameplay, thanks to the new weapons, refined combat system, and exploration of colorful biomes and mysterious islands. For the first time in the series, you can control your own ship as you battle enemy vessels and discover hidden treasures on the open seas. With a massive world map to explore, side quests to conquer, and endless loot to plunder, Cat Quest III allows you to chart your own course and uncover the mysteries of the Purribean at your own pace.

Crime Scene Cleaner

After Supermarket Simulator, this is another recent simulator release that surprised us with how much we enjoyed it. In Crime Scene Cleaner, you’re the mob’s go-to guy for cleaning up their mess. This isn’t your typical cleanup job – bloodstains, bodies, and the stench of crime are all part of your daily grind. The clock is ticking, the cops are close, but you’ve got a mission: clean up, get paid, and save your daughter’s life.

Armed with various tools, from trusty mops to powerful washers, you’ll tackle gruesome crime scenes, solve puzzles, and uncover hidden secrets. The game’s upgrade system allows you to improve your equipment, making each job a little less daunting. Plus, with an engaging storyline and compelling voice acting, you’ll be hooked on both the dirty work and the drama. Crime Scene Cleaner perfectly blends the thrill of crime with the satisfaction of a job well done.

Endzone 2

Three years after the release of the first game, Gentlymad Studios is back with the Early Access post-apocalyptic colony sim Endzone 2.  After a catastrophe has devastated the Earth, it’s up to you to ensure the survival of humankind. Build a settlement in a hostile environment and brave the changing seasons. Explore the wasteland around you, go on dangerous missions, and expand your settlement.

Compared to the first game, Endzone 2 no longer has a huge map but allows you to have multiple settlements at the same time. Vehicles have also been added, a huge quality-of-life feature that allows for better exploration and trading. The graphics also look much better! Our only criticism at this point is the performance, as most of the game runs at around 30fps. We’re looking forward to seeing a more polished version of the game in the future.

Fields of Mistria

Next up is Fields of Mistria, an Early Access Farming/Life Simulation we spent many hours with back in August. This cozy village, nestled between forest and sea, offers you a homestead full of potential – if you’re willing to help restore the town to its former glory after a mysterious earthquake. You’ll build your dream farm, uncover ancient magic, and maybe even find love among the 12 unique marriage candidates.

What sets Fields of Mistria apart is its thoughtful quality of life features. Everything feels smooth and intuitive, from energy that only depletes when you’re actively using it to crafting systems that draw directly from your chest. And with the ability to customize your character, farm, and even save at any time, the game puts you in control of your adventure. Fields of Mistria is the perfect escape for anyone who misses the magic of old-school farm sims with a fresh twist.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit

With Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit, one of our favorite horror franchises got a new installment in August! This game takes you beyond the usual jump scares and plunges you into a time-twisting mystery. As Oswald, a bored kid hungry for excitement, you stumble upon an eerie ball pit in a dilapidated pizzeria that sends you back in time. But the past isn’t as safe as it seems, and now you’re on the run from relentless animatronics with a dark agenda.

With its mix of puzzle-solving and heart-pounding chases, Into the Pit keeps you on the edge of your seat as you race to uncover secrets and save yourself, your father, and others trapped in time. The story is gripping, the puzzles are satisfying, and the scares are real. In our opinion, this game is a standout in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. Even if you’re not a fan of the franchise or even familiar with it, the graphics, story, and atmosphere make this a perfect choice for any horror game fan.

Star Wars Outlaws

The long-awaited new game in the Star Wars universe finally launched at the end of last month. Star Wars Outlaws puts you in the shoes of the villainous Kay Vess as you explore a vast open galaxy. Become the most wanted person in the galaxy, go on high-stakes missions, and do whatever it takes to outwit the people who want you dead.

The game is a refreshing dive into the galaxy far, far away, blending stealth, action, and exploration in a way that feels fresh yet familiar to longtime fans. The stealth mechanics are a highlight – sneaking through forbidden areas and pulling off silent takedowns makes for some tense, thrilling moments. One of the standout aspects is that the Skywalker saga doesn’t weigh it down. Instead, it gives you a sprawling world to explore, full of shady deals, new skills, and dangerous adventures.

Tactical Breach Wizards

Tactical Breach Wizards plunges you into a world where wizards in kevlar take on a modern-day conspiracy. You’ll lead a squad of magical misfits through turn-based tactical battles, each wizard equipped with their own unique spells. Whether it’s throwing a traffic warlock out of a window or transforming into a rabid dog, the creative possibilities are endless.

The game strikes the perfect balance between fun and challenge, with smart gameplay that rewards creativity. Plus, the witty, often hilarious dialog keeps things fresh and entertaining. Think XCOM with fewer headaches and more spells. If you like turn-based strategy with a twist, Tactical Breach Wizards is a must!

UBOAT

After five years in Early Access, the full version of the WWII simulation UBOAT was finally released in August. As the captain of a German U-boat, your mission is to guide your crew through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic, balancing the razor-thin line between survival and disaster. Every decision can mean the difference between your crew’s safe return or a watery grave.

The game’s survival mechanics are brutal and unforgiving. Damage to your boat can spiral into catastrophic situations, forcing you to think on your feet and make tough decisions. UBOAT delivers an experience as deep as the ocean with realistic simulation elements. Every detail, from the ballast that affects your ship’s trim to the curvature of the Earth, is meticulously modeled. If you’re a fan of simulations, you should definitely check this one out!

Visions of Mana

Visions of Mana takes the beloved Mana series to new heights, offering fans both a return to the roots and a new adventure. Play as Val as he and his childhood friend Hinna, the fiery Alm of Fire, journey to the legendary Mana Tree. But it’s more than just a quest – it’s a deep dive into a world of elemental power, mysterious friends, and truths that will make you question fate itself.

With its lush, semi-open world teeming with adorable yet deadly monsters, you’ll be immersed in fast-paced, three-dimensional combat that lets you switch between classes and characters to suit your playstyle. The vibrant landscapes feel almost painted, drawing you into every corner of this mystical land. Companions like the Pikuls make exploration even more dynamic and fun. If you’ve been craving that classic PS2 JRPG vibe, this game definitely delivers.
