Valheim is a game that stands out for its variety in terms of weapons. There isn’t one weapon that’s the best – the different weapons excel depending on individual play styles or the strengths and weaknesses of certain monsters, bosses, and enemies.
In this guide, we’ll introduce you to the best weapons in Valheim, including shields and armor, and tell you what you need to craft them.
Table of Contents
1) The best weapons in Valheim: Best one-handed weapons
The Blackmetal Sword – An allrounder with high damage
The Blackmetal Sword isn’t considered the best sword in Valheim without reason. This impressive melee weapon not only has the highest base damage when it comes to slashing, but it’s also a true all-rounder with various strengths.
The only problem is that you won’t have access to this item until later in the game. To forge the Black Metal Sword, you need a blast furnace, for which you have to build a workbench. You will unlock this only after you defeat the Dragon Mother Morder – the fourth boss.
Farming the necessary materials is a bit more difficult, but it’s worth it. You get the raw ore from the Fulings in the Plains. This biome is tough territory that made many a Viking warrior ragequit, but with some skill, you can defeat the Fulings and get the raw ore that way. You can then smelt the raw ore in a blast furnace to create the Black Metal Sword.
You’ll need:
- 20 x Black metal
- 5 x Linen thread
- 2 x Fine wood
The Porcupine – The morning star of the Vikings
If you’re looking for the best mace in Valheim, the Porcupine is for you. This heavy mace is equipped with deadly spikes and can be swung quickly despite its heaviness. It deals both slashing and stabbing damage, making it ideal for PvE and PvP battles.
Resistance is futile: With the mace, which strongly resembles the morning star, you force most opponents to the ground. To forge it, you need a needle and thread – and that’s less trivial than it sounds. The needles are obtained in the Plains from the Deathsquitos – a name that speaks for itself. Thread is obtained by spinning flax. For the mace you need level 4 forging and the following materials:
- 20 x Iron
- 5 x Fine wood
- 10 x Linen thread
- 5 x Needles
The Blackmetal Axe – High durability and strength combined
What would a Viking be without his axe? The Blackmetal Axe is the strongest axe in Valheim and has high durability. Unlike the two-handed Battleaxe, this one is a bit harder to craft but deals significantly more damage. Since the axe is a one-handed weapon, it makes an axe-shield combo possible.
You will need level four forging and these materials:
- 20 x Black metal
- 6 x Fine wood
- 5 x Linen thread
With the Blackmetal Axe, you can not only cut down trees but also enemies. So, start forging and let’s go!
The Fang Spear – The Viking’s best friend
If you want to keep scary creatures at bay, which you can encounter in the dark depths of the forests, on the frosty heights and musty swamps of Valheim, you should always have your spear with you. The Fang Spear becomes the Viking’s best friend then, and together with a shield, it provides the ideal combo for fans of light and fast weapons. You’ll get the materials earlier in the game when you reach the mountain biome.
- 10 x Ancient bark
- 2 x Leather Scraps
- 4 x Wolf fang
- 2 x Silver
2) The best two-handed weapons
The Battleaxe – Brute and ingenious
The Battleaxe is undoubtedly one of the best two-handed weapons in Valheim. Although it swings relatively slowly, it has a high damage ratio and a knock-back ability. This weapon is easy and quick to craft and has respectable damage and parry stats. To craft it, all you need is level 2 forging and these materials:
- 30 x Ancient Bark
- 35 x Iron
- 4 x Leather scraps
The Blackmetal Atgeir – The black death blade
The Blackmetal atgeir is considered one of the best weapons in Valheim – in the right hands, the sharp blade becomes a deadly and terrifying weapon. The atgeir deals very high damage and offers excellent crowd control, as you can attack multiple targets in a radius. It is an absolute must for every warrior. You can craft it with level four forging and the following ingredients:
- 10 x Fine wood
- 30 x Black metal
- 5 x Linen thread
The Iron Sledge – Concentrated AoE Power
The Iron Sledge is not Mjölnir, but it is powerful nonetheless. As the strongest sledge in the game, it deals enormous AoE damage. With this, you can deal damage to many enemies at once.
The Iron Sledge is a powerful weapon that comes in handy early in the game. As the name might suggest, the Iron Sledge requires one thing above all else: iron. You can get the Draugr Elite trophy from the Draugr in the Swamp biome. In addition to level 2 forging, you will need:
- 10 x Ancient Bark
- 30 x Iron
- 4 x Ymir flesh
- 1 x Draugr Elite Trophy
3) The best shields in Valheim
The Black Metal Shield – The king of shields
The Black Metal Shield is the best shield in Valheim, offering 90 block power and 50 parry power. The shield excels in battle with variety, in addition, it offers you more movement speed than the Serpent scale shield. This makes it easier for you to parry and counterattack at lightning speed. You will need:
- 10 x Fine wood
- 8x Black metal
- 5x Chain
The Black Metal Tower Shield – The real blockbuster
The Black Metal Tower Shield isn’t better than the Black Metal Shield but it’s a close second. It has significantly less parry power but higher block stats (105). The Tower Shield is the ideal companion for tanks in groups. You can get the black metal for the production in the Plains, and the chains in the Swamps. In total you need:
- 10 x Black metal
- 15 x Fine wood
- 7 x Chain
4) The best bow
The Draugr Fang – Poison damage from a distance
The Draugr Fang is one of the must-have items in Valheim. As the best bow in the game, it’s ideal for keeping bloodthirsty bosses at bay to avoid melee damage. The lightning-fast bow comes with high base damage and generates additional poison damage with every arrow that hits the target. This is what you need to craft it:
- 10 x Ancient Bark
- 20 x Silver
- 2 x Deer hide
- 10 x Guck
5) The best knife
The Blackmetal Knife – Attack from the Shadows
The Blackmetal Knife is the ideal weapon for those who don’t want to miss stealth elements in their gameplay. If Assassin’s Creed – Valhalla wasn’t enough for you, you can once again become a silent and swift Viking assassin, dealing high damage from the shadows.
Crafting requires:
- 4 x Fine Wood
- 10 x Black Metal
- 5 x Linen thread
6) Special weapons
The Stagbreaker – The best weapon to start with
Of course, at the beginning of the game, you don’t get the strongest items right away, but you also need a good weapon. The Stagbreaker is the perfect sledge for the early game. You can craft it already after the first boss. For this you need:
- 2 x Leather scraps
- 20 x Heartwood
- 5 x Deer trophy
The Silver Sword – Good against werewolves
The Silver Sword deals not only slashing damage, but also spirit damage. As we already know from old sagas and horror movies, silver is extremely useful in the fight against werewolves. Overall, the damage is respectable, which is why the item is worth mentioning to us. The materials you need are:
- 40 x Silver
- 5 x Iron
- 2 x Wood
- 3 x Leather scraps
The Frostner – Frosty greetings from Valheim
Even though it isn’t the best club, the Frostner is one of Valheim’s strongest and best weapons.
Unlike the Porcupine, which deals primarily physical damage, the Frostner deals frost and spirit damage to its enemies. It is therefore not maximally effective against all enemies but is worthwhile in combat against those that have a weakness for these damage types. This requires the following resources:
- 10 x Ancient Bark
- 30 x Silver
- 5 x Ymir Flesh
- 5 x Freeze Gland
The Abyssal Harpoon – The catcher from the abyss
The abyssal harpoon is a unique weapon that allows you to play tricks on foes. It’s ideal for catching enemies and depriving them of their mobility. You can use it like a spear and draw enemies towards you for looting. This approach is ideal for sea serpents. The following materials are needed:
- 8x Fine wood
- 30x Chitin
- 3x Leather scraps
The Serpent Scale Shield – Imitate the movements of a snake
The Serpent Scale Shield also has its place among the best shields in the game. While the blocking power is lower than the Black Metal Shield, the movement penalty is lower. To farm for the Serpent scales, you need to go to the Ocean.
You will need the following resources:
- 8x Serpent scales
- 10x Fine wood
- 4x Iron
7) Crafting the best armor
Padded Armor – Well prepared for battle
If you don’t want to enter the golden halls of Valhalla right at the beginning of the game and advance quickly in the game, it’s better to go into battle well equipped. The best armor is the Padded Armor, which consists of a cuirass, greaves, and a helmet. The strongest armor set in the game is complemented by a Linen Cape.
The Padded Armor impresses with an armor score of 78 and a low movement penalty. In addition, the set is easy to make – except for the cape. For the cape, you need flax from the Plains. Crafting all items requires a forge, a level 2 workbench, and the following resources:
– Padded cuirass:
- 10 x Iron
- 20 x Linen thread
– Padded greaves:
- 10x Iron
- 20x Linen thread
– Padded helmet:
- 10 x Iron
- 15 x Linen thread
– Linen Cape:
- 1 x Silver
- 20 x Linen thread
