Game Science’s action RPG is one of the most anticipated titles of the year. Shortly after its release, the game managed to attract more than two million players to Steam simultaneously. An absolute record! In our Black Myth Wukong Tips and Tricks, we explain how the combat system works, how to find the best build, and what you need to know about the game world.
Table of Contents
1) Watch your stamina
You’ll spend most of the game in combat. Good stamina management is crucial to your success. If you run out of breath before a boss’s big attack, it could be the end of you. Every action in Black Myth Wukong consumes some of your stamina. This applies to attacks and dodges as well as running.
The system is very reminiscent of the Souls and Souls-like games. The mechanics will seem familiar if you’ve played one of those games before. If this is your first game of this type, you should get into the habit of keeping an eye on your health bar at all times. It will be chronically depleted initially, but you can increase its value with items and skills as the game progresses.
2) Follow the lights
Black Myth Wukong doesn’t provide you with a map. So you have to find your own way. The game is pretty linear. However, sometimes, there are side paths where smaller quests and mini-bosses await you.
To make sure you don’t get lost, follow the golden lights in the area. These will lead you to the next shrine (Keeper’s Shrine). This serves the same function as the Sites of Grace in Elden Ring or the Bonfires in Dark Souls.
3) Learn to dodge
Unlike many other games of this type, there are no counters in Black Myth Wukong. Parry options are also not immediately available and are only unlocked later in the campaign through certain spells.
The only defensive mechanic available from the start is dodging. This makes it one of the most critical parts of the game to master. We recommend that you practice dodging a lot and get the timing down.
Only when dodging has become second nature should you attempt one of the big bosses. They show no mercy; even a few direct hits will send you to the ground. Fortunately, dodging can be made more efficient with the right skills. You should prioritize these skills and unlock them first.
Your dodge roll won’t be slowed by weight overload. So you can pick up items at will and not be limited in battle.
4) Skills can be reset
The good news is that you can’t skill yourself into a dead end and create a build that prevents you from progressing. This is because all skills can be reset and redistributed at shrines. The bad news: The skill tree in Black Myth Wukong is huge and can be intimidating to new players.
Our tip here is: don’t overthink it and just try different things. As mentioned, you should focus on your stamina skills and improve your dodging. You can’t go wrong with these skills, and you’ll notice a big positive difference in gameplay.
5) Consume Focus Points for more damage
At the bottom right of the screen, you’ll see three circles that will increase in size. These represent your focus points. You charge them up by performing light attacks or dodging enemy attacks at the right moment. Once charged, the circles can be used to increase the damage caused by your attacks.
There are two ways to harness the power of your focus points in Black Myth Wukong. You can either combine them with your light attacks to increase their effectiveness. Or you can use them for heavy attacks. This involves holding the button and waiting for the focus point to charge. This type of attack is one of the most powerful in the game, and if you have the chance, you should use it in boss fights.
6) Glowing elite enemies give you skills
If you encounter a Yaoguai Chief or Elite enemy in Black Myth Wukong, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise when you defeat them. These enemies leave a flame that can be picked up to give your character spiritual skills. Your opponent’s abilities will be transferred to you. The blue glow on their bodies can identify the elites and chiefs.
7) Black Myth Wukong tips on shrines
Of course, we need to mention the shrines in our Black Myth Wukong tips and tricks. They are an important part of the game and are spread all over the world. They essentially function like the Bonfires or Sites of Grace in Fromsoftware’s games. Primarily, they serve as checkpoints where you’ll spawn when you die.
You can also use shrines as fast travel points in Black Myth Wukong. This feels a little strange initially, as there is no map, and you must choose your waypoints blindly. However, this is where the game’s linear structure comes in handy. Depending on your progress in the main story, you’ll know which shrines you discovered last.
We recommend that you regularly check the functions of the shrines. Occasionally, the game will add a new feature without telling you. For example, the production of medicine and outfits. This is not available from the start and is quietly integrated into the shrine after a few hours.
Use your time in the shrine to trade, upgrade your skills, craft, and brew. Of course, your health, mana, and gourd will be replenished each time you use them. But that’s not all. Defeated enemies also rise from the dead and can be found at their spawn points.
Each function of the shrine expands as you progress through the story, find new crafting materials or defeat bosses. At the beginning of the game, the shop is very basic. However, as you progress, new products are added. The same goes for the crafting menu. The more items you find, the more weapons and armor you can craft.
8) Find a meditation spot
Places to meditate offer you two benefits in Black Myth Wukong. One tangible and one aesthetic. Each one you find gives you an extra skill point to use in the skill tree. If you find them all, that’s a total of 24 skill points.
The aesthetic reason is that the meditation spots usually offer a fantastic landscape view, which looks phenomenal thanks to Unreal Engine 5.
9) Destroy jars
Will in Black Myth Wukong is what souls were in the Souls games. It’s the currency of the game and is used for almost everything. Every enemy you kill and every boss you defeat will give you some of it. However, it won’t be enough to buy everything you need in the shop or to craft the equipment you want.
So keep an eye out for jars that can be broken in the game world. They won’t drop huge amounts of will, just a small amount. This will add up over time, and if you smash everything in every area, you will get closer to the next expensive item. So explore all the side paths and leave no part of the game undiscovered.
10) Fast travel tips
In keeping with the previous tip, we also recommend using fast travel to return to locations of earlier chapters. For example, if you have yet to defeat a side boss or visit a part of the map, you can do so with increased power. This will give you extra will and new quests.
11) Look for green orbs
In addition to the standard enemies, bosses, and jars, Green Orbs is another way to gain will in Black Myth Wukong. They can be seen afar and look like a small, magical fire – a will-o’-the-wisp. Collecting them will also give you another benefit. They will replenish your gourd charges.
Gourds are the game’s healing items, allowing you to regenerate while traveling or in battle. However, they are limited in supply and can only be replenished at shrines. When your supply is depleted, a green orb comes in handy. This will allow you to replenish your health without having to respawn enemies you have already defeated.
12) Get a transformation spell quickly
Get a transformation spell early on in Black Myth Wukong. This will allow you to transform into one of your opponents. Not only does this give you access to their attack patterns, but you also have the advantage of not taking damage while you’re transformed.
This is especially useful in boss fights, where you can effectively drain your opponent’s health. The first of these spells is obtained when you defeat Guangzhi in the Wolves’ Forest.
13) Always carry medicine
Medicines are an excellent supplement to your gourd energy. They can be used to give your character additional effects. For example, they can increase your damage, boost your stats, and weaken your opponents’ attacks. Only start a boss fight with good medicine.
At the beginning of Black Myth Wukong, you’ll be dependent on the medicine you can buy or find in chests. As the game progresses, you’ll be able to craft them yourself. You’ll receive the crafting skill from one of the NPCs as part of the main story.
You’ll need the right ingredients to make medicines. These can be found all over the game world and recognized by their shiny glow. Collect everything you can get your hands on, and don’t be afraid to convert the items. Since you will constantly rely on medicine in the boss fights, you should always make everything that can be crafted in the menu.
There’s no point in saving up for later, as you’ll be resupplied all the time, and it’s better to go into battle with a full supply of medicine than with unused resources.
14) Adapt your build to the situation
Each boss in Black Myth Wukong has unique attack patterns and strategies to make life difficult for you. A different set of skills is recommended for each of them to be well prepared. With 81 different bosses in total, creating a standard build that will get you through the entire game is impossible.
The solution is to adapt your skill tree to the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent before each boss fight. If facing a particularly fast and agile enemy, invest more in your dodge skills. Against slower tanks, you should focus on increased damage and heavy attacks.
Your equipment should also be tailored to the characteristics of the boss. Each weapon and armor usually has a specific effect you can use in battle. However, ensure you benefit most from wearing a complete armor set. Not only will this increase your base stats, but it will also give you the special ability.
15) Black Myth Wukong tips for combat
Finally, let’s take a closer look at battles. After all, they are the heart of the game and what you will spend most of the 40–50-hour campaign with. Here are a few quick tips at a glance:
- Watch out for fungus people. They can poison you.
- Use secondary effects to refine your play style.
- Enemies can trigger friendly fire. Use enemies as shields to weaken them and protect yourself.
- The first and best stance for newcomers to the game is the Smash stance.
- Hidden jars at the end of a side quest can temporarily boost your stats. Use this for boss fights.
- Use everything you have in boss fights: transformation, mind power, focus points, etc. Some items can be used twice due to cooldowns.
