EGX Through the Years
The humble beginnings
EGX, which began as Eurogamer Expo, opened its doors for the first time in 2008 during the London Games Festival. Held at the Old Truman Brewery, it attracted around 4,000 gaming enthusiasts – a solid start for what would become a must-attend event for gamers across Europe.
In its early years, the convention moved around a bit, with 2009 seeing it split between Leeds and London. It wasn’t until 2010 that it found a more permanent home at London’s Earls Court, where it remained for the next five years.
Expanding the Universe: Rezzed
In 2012, the show branched out with Rezzed, a spin-off event focused on PC and indie games. It made its debut in Brighton before becoming an integral part of the Eurogamer Expo itself. Here, smaller indie developers were able to shine alongside the industry giants.
Birmingham Takes Over
In 2015, with the closure of Earls Court, EGX packed up and moved to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. This marked a new era for the convention, allowing it to grow in size and ambition. With the move came the simplification of the name from Eurogamer Expo to EGX.
A New Frontier: EGX Berlin
In 2018, EGX expanded beyond the UK with a new event in Berlin, Germany. This marked the brand’s first foray into mainland Europe, reflecting its ever-growing popularity. The move helped solidify EGX’s position as a major player on the international gaming scene.
Adapting to a New World: The COVID Era
The pandemic forced EGX, like many other events, to adapt. After postponements and cancellations in 2020, they partnered with PAX to create a massive online event called PAX Online X EGX Digital. This digital version kept the spirit of the convention alive, allowing gamers to connect and engage from the safety of their own homes.
EGX Today
EGX returned to in-person events in 2021 with strict safety measures in place. In 2023, the convention returned to London’s ExCel with exciting eSports tournaments for Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 6. With partners like TikTok on board, EGX continues to evolve and provide a memorable experience for gamers.
