Even before its release, the new game from FromSoftware became a Steam bestseller thanks to numerous pre-orders and wishlist entries. In our ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN tips and tricks, we show you what to do first after starting the game and how to successfully complete a run. We also provide helpful information about weapons, expeditions, and more.
Table of Contents
1) Get enough healing potions
The bosses in Limveld are relentless and can dish out severe damage. This makes it all the more important to increase the number of flask refills as early as possible. Keep an eye out for the Churches of Marika in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, which are marked in gold on the map.
When you start the game, you’ll usually end up near a small group of enemies. This is a good place to earn your first experience points and loot. After defeating them, head to the nearest church and collect the flask recharge. Try to secure at least two recharges as quickly as possible. As the game progresses, the ring shrinks, making some recharges unreachable over time.
2) Use the Roundtable Hold
As in the main game, the Roundtable Hold is the central hub for your progress in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. After completing the tutorial, you’ll gain access to various corridors leading to different areas and functions.
There, you’ll encounter numerous NPCs with whom you can interact. You can purchase important equipment here and find a training area where you can hone your skills. As you progress in the game, the hub will change. New rooms become accessible, additional characters appear, and more opportunities to improve your character become available.
It’s best to return to the Roundtable Hold after completing a task or making significant progress. This ensures you won’t miss any positive changes.
3) Look for forts and churches
After securing two flask refills in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, as recommended in Tip 1, focus on forts and large churches. There, you can find valuable upgrades and rewards with minimal risk. Their defenses are weak, and the bosses are easy to defeat.
Most forts have a room with three treasure chests in the basement. The upper battlements are usually guarded by a knight who stands watch over a chest containing a Stonesword Key. Grab this key to open Evergoals and get more loot.
The situation is similar in large churches. You can either fight a boss battle directly in the main room or take a shaft down to the basement and collect your loot from the altar. Always look up in churches because there are often more chests hidden behind the roof beams.
4) Kill the bosses on the second day
During the first day, focus on loot and upgrades. The second day in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is dedicated to killing bosses. Take out as many as possible to get runes, permanent bonuses, and other rewards.
If your team doesn’t have the right weapons to counter specific boss weaknesses yet, focus first on areas where these types of damage are more common. This is where you’ll have the best chance of receiving the appropriate weapons as rewards.
Use your Stonesword Keys to open Evergoals and face the large enemy bosses, which are marked on the map starting on day two. They are much more challenging, but they will provide the necessary equipment for the third day.
5) Unlock the Duchess
Of the eight unlockable classes in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, the Duchess is one of the strongest. With her Restage ability, she reapplies part of the recently inflicted damage to the target. And the cooldown period is extremely short. This allows the Duchess to deal additional damage continuously without requiring your team to take any extra action.
Restage reactivates all elemental and status effects of the original attacks. Attacking bosses with corresponding weaknesses will quickly defeat them. Defeat the first expedition boss and obtain the Old Pocketwatch to unlock the Duchess. Give it to the priestess, who will then reveal her true identity.
6) Try out ranged weapons
The following ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN tip applies to all classes: Use ranged combat! Bosses often put you in a tight spot with their wild jumps and quick sprints. Their aggressive attack patterns give you few opportunities to land safe hits in close combat. It’s best to go on an expedition with several Ironeyes and let them deal constant damage from a distance.
Even with a class that isn’t optimized for ranged combat, ranged weapons are worthwhile. After all, they have unlimited ammunition. If an enemy is too fast or aggressive in close combat, you can at least target them with a crossbow or bow. In dicey situations, especially, a few weak hits are better than none at all.
7) Use Spiritstreams correctly
Time pressure forces you to move quickly through the game world of ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. With Spiritstreams, however, you can perform flexible jumps in all directions. This allows you to overcome cliffs and escape dangerous situations.
Position yourself at the desired angle, then activate the spirit source to propel yourself into the air. You can even adjust your flight path mid-jump.
8) Swap your relics
Along with your weapons, relics are among the most important building blocks of your character. Manage them at the blue candle altar in the center of the Roundtable Hold. You unlock new relics in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN by completing expeditions. After each one, check the Relics menu to distribute your new finds to your classes.
This allows you to adapt your play style and customize your build for specific challenges. Each class has slots of different colors. These determine which relics can be used. You can identify the colors by the gemstone in the center of the relic or by the colored dot on the icon in the menu.
9) Get Smithing Stones
Starting on the second day, keep an eye out for mine tunnels. They are scattered across the map and guarded by a troll, a knight, or a pumpkin head boss. Defeating these enemies will guarantee you a Smithing Stone. You can use these stones on anvils to upgrade blue weapons to purple quality. This noticeably improves their abilities.
You can then specifically strengthen weapons that are well-suited to an upcoming boss’s weaknesses. Alternatively, you can upgrade your favorite weapon to the next level so that you are well-equipped for the rest of the game. Anvils are usually found near merchants.
10) ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN Tips for expeditions
The sheer size of the maps in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN can be intimidating at first, and you may not know where to start on an expedition. The following bullet points will help you progress efficiently:
- First, check the map to get an overview.
- Plan your route to pass by Sites of Grace as often as possible.
- Prioritize your objectives so you can reach them before the fog engulfs them.
- Before each boss fight, ensure that you have enough time. Once you’re surrounded by fog, it is difficult to escape.
- Move purposefully from one planned location to the next, stopping at Sites of Grace along the way. This will provide a constant flow of runes, healing, and level-ups.
11) ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN combat tips
- Many weapons provide passive bonuses even when they are not being used.
- Use the weapon traits you find early on to shape your build.
- Avoid powerful bosses on the first day, and don’t face major enemy bosses until you reach level 8.
- Bosses don’t regenerate health when you flee. Attacking them again later will make them easier to defeat.
- Don’t hesitate to retreat from a fight if you’re in danger of being surrounded.
- Standard abilities have short cooldown periods, so use them as often as possible.
- A weapon’s bonuses are more important than its damage value. Read the properties after each drop.
- Check escape routes in mines and dungeons, and keep an eye on the map.
- Don’t be stingy with consumables. You can’t take items with you to the next run, so use them!
12) Avoid cataclysms
Occasionally, you’ll come across areas marked with a blue-green circle in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. These are cataclysms. As soon as you enter one, the combat conditions change significantly. All enemies in the cataclysm receive significant health and damage bonuses.
Additionally, entering one triggers an invasion by enemy phantom doppelgängers. Cataclysms are somewhat unreliable in terms of rewards. Defeated phantoms drop improved versions of their standard weapons, but there’s no guarantee they’ll suit your current build. Unless you’re absolutely sure you’re up to the challenge, you should avoid the blue-green zones.
