Essential Borderlands 4 Tips and Tricks

Are you ready for chaos? In our Borderlands 4 tips and tricks, we’ll show you how to master combat, maximize elemental damage, and select the best weapons for each fight. You’ll also learn how to explore Kairos efficiently, handle side missions and contracts, and hunt down Vault Key Fragments for the best loot.

Combat Tips

Use your Repkit wisely

Borderlands 4 tips: Two characters from Borderlands 4 are fighting in a colorful, fantastical environment. The left character wears a black jacket with colorful patterns and holds a green and blue weapon. The right character has a muscular build, wears metal armor, and holds two glowing blades.

Your Repkit is your lifeline when things get messy. It instantly restores health, keeps you regenerating for a while, and even provides temporary buffs like reduced incoming damage. There’s no downside to using it, so don’t hesitate when your health bar begins to drop. Just keep an eye on the cooldown in the lower left corner of your HUD.

Dodge or die

Borderlands 4 lets you move like never before. With your hover pack, you can dash in any direction (except diagonally) up to two times before the gauge needs a refill. Use dodges to slip past charging enemies or evade volleys of missiles without breaking your fire rate. Mastering movement is key, especially in boss fights where one hit can shred your health.

Keep one weak enemy alive

A player in Borderlands 4 aims a gun at an enemy in colorful armor. Rocks and explosions are visible in the background.

When the bullets fly in Borderlands 4 and you go down, you can score a Second Wind by finishing off an enemy. The trick? Leave one low-health grunt alive during big fights. That way, if you get knocked down, you’ve got an easy target to get back on your feet. It’s a lifesaver when respawn points are far away.

Make use of elemental damage

Elemental damage is a major game-changer in Borderlands 4. Every gun can deal one of six damage types: Kinetic, Incendiary, Shock, Corrosive, Cryo, and Radiation. Choosing the right element can make fights significantly easier, especially on higher difficulties where enemies resist more but also have bigger weaknesses.

In Borderlands 4, a futuristic weapon is shown in the lower left corner, while a spaceship with the symbol '17' hovers above. In the background, there are two large silver tanks and several streetlights.

Which element works best?

  • Incendiary → Melts red health bars (Bio). Perfect against flesh.
  • Shock → Shreds yellow health bars (Shields). Zap them into dust.
  • Corrosive → Destroys blue health bars (Armor). Best against bots and armored foes.
  • Radiation → Good vs. Shields, causes explosions on death. Great for crowds.
  • Cryo → Works on Armor, can freeze enemies, and drain their HP over time.
  • Kinetic → Your baseline damage. Solid all around, but no extra effects.

Watch out for weaknesses

  • Incendiary struggles against shields and heavy armor
  • Shock doesn’t do much to flesh or armored targets
  • Corrosive falls short when used on flesh or shields
  • Cryo loses impact against shielded enemies
  • Radiation underperforms against armored opponents

Pro tip

Some bosses change their elemental affinities when you replay missions. Always check health bar colors and adjust your loadout as needed.

Weapon Tips

Make the most of Ordnance

Borderlands 4 introduces the Ordnance slot, and it’s a game-changer. Here, you can equip grenades, rocket launchers, energy cannons, and other heavy weapons. The best part? They don’t use ammo. Just wait for the cooldown and fire away. To keep your DPS high, unleash Ordnance every time it’s ready.

Look beyond the numbers

A weapon’s rarity and DPS aren’t everything. Sure, a shiny purple gun with big numbers looks appealing, but it might have poor accuracy or a slow fire rate. That can disrupt your playstyle and even slow you down. Always review the stats and description before changing gear. Some guns have alternate firing modes or reload tricks—like sticky bombs or exploding throw reloads—that can completely alter how you use them.

Manage your ammo capacity

  • SMGs, ARs, and pistols: You can go a long time without upgrades since these ammo types drop constantly.
  • Shotguns and snipers: Focus on upgrading these first. Shotguns use ammo rapidly, and sniper rifles usually require multiple shots per target.
  • Backpack space: Upgrade it regularly. You’ll frequently acquire new guns, and more space means you can sell more for cash.

Borderlands 4 tips: Look for Silos

Exploring Kairos is never dull. You’ll encounter patrols, bosses, and a lot of loot, but stay alert for Silos. These structures hold decommissioned Order tech, and with your ECHO-4, you can hijack them for the Crimson Resistance.

Why Silos matter in Borderlands 4:

  • Vault Key Fragments: Each reclaimed Silo indicates roughly where one is.
  • Fast Travel points: Use them to quickly move around the map.
  • Traversal perks: After reclaiming a Silo, a hacked comms balloon launches, allowing you to zipline up and glide directly toward your next objective.

Complete side missions and contracts

The story campaign is a blast, but don’t sleep on the side missions. They’re a goldmine for loot, cash, XP, and cosmetics. Some of the best skins in Borderlands 4 are locked behind these quests, so if you want your Vault Hunter to look as badass as possible, you’ll need to grind them out.

Once you unlock Contract Boards at Safe Houses and Faction Towns, pick up at least four or five at a time. They’re quick, often passive, and stack with your usual gameplay.

  • Collect and Patrol Contracts can complete themselves as you explore.
  • Rewards scale with your level, meaning you’ll get big XP payouts later on.
  • At level 18, some Contracts gave over 4,000 XP each.

Search for Vault Key Fragments

No Borderlands game is complete without a hunt for Vaults, and Borderlands 4 is no exception. By exploring and treasure-hunting across Kairos, you’ll collect Vault Key Fragments. Once you’ve gathered enough, you can assemble a full Vault Key.

Why Vault Keys matter:

  • They open Primordial Vaults, advanced dungeons concealed in every region.
  • These Vaults are difficult—prepare for tough fights and bosses.
  • The rewards are worth it: extremely powerful loot drops inside.
  • Completing Vaults also upgrades your glide pack, giving you a permanent boost to exploration and combat mobility.

Exploration Tips

Let ECHO-4 guide you

The robot ECHO-4 from the game Borderlands 4 raises one hand. It has a round, metallic shape with two large blue lights for eyes and wears a worn gray and orange armor.

Lost on Kairos? Call on your ECHO-4. This small bot isn’t just good for hacking; it will also highlight paths, climbable walls, ladders, and grapple points. On PC, just press the X key and follow the glowing line directly to your next objective. It’s a huge time-saver when missions get confusing.

Get your first ride

The map in Borderlands 4 is huge, and walking everywhere can be a chore. Early in the story, you’ll unlock your first vehicle. After that, you can summon it anytime without needing a Catch-a-Ride. Vehicles can blow up pretty easily, but that’s alright. You can hop into a new one instantly. Use your ride’s weapons to take out weaker mobs, saving your ammo and skills for harder fights.

Watch for world events

A player character holds a weapon. In the background, a large transparent dome represents a world event in 'Borderlands 4'. Health and ammo stats are visible at the bottom.

Watch for bubble domes around the map in Borderlands 4. Step inside to trigger a world boss fight. These fights are serious—you only get one chance. If you die or leave the bubble, the boss despawns until another dome appears. Defeat them to earn some of the best early and mid-game loot.
