10 Frostpunk 2 Tips and Tricks For a Good Start

The unique gameplay of an icy alternate reality enters its second round. Our Frostpunk 2 Tips and Tricks show you how to save your city from freezing to death and defend yourself against the unforgiving natural environment. We also explain what has changed since the death of the captain in part 1.

1) Free The Hexagons From The Ice (Frostbreak)

Let’s start with what is probably the biggest difference from its predecessor: scale. In the first Frostpunk, there were a manageable number of inhabitants, but now you’re responsible for a large city with thousands of inhabitants. This means that neither the people nor the buildings can be controlled or placed individually.

Frostpunk 2 Tips: Use Frostbreak

Around your city are hexagonal areas (or ‘hexes’) filled with resources, fuel, materials, and prefabricated parts, just like you know from the Civilization games. To make them accessible, you need to use Frostbreak. To do this, press the X key and select up to eight hexes to defrost.

2) How to Get a Heating Bonus

Providing your city with heat is the core element of Frostpunk 2 and the most important factor for its survival. Initially, your city will run on coal, but as reserves dwindle, you’ll switch to oil as your reign progresses.

It’s essential for efficiency to secure a heating bonus for each district. Especially on the higher difficulty levels, your city will definitely die of cold without this bonus. To get it, three tiles of the district in question must touch three tiles of the neighboring district.

If this is the case, you’ll get 20 extra heat. Make sure that the neighboring neighborhoods match. To avoid disease, residential areas shouldn’t be directly adjacent to industrial areas.

3) The Functions of Districts

Let’s take a closer look at the districts in Frostpunk 2. There are five different types of districts, and each requires six free tiles to build. This time, instead of building individual houses, you create entire districts. Below is an overview of the different functions:

  • Housing District: This shelters your people from the cold. If there isn’t enough living space, your citizens will have to sleep outside and freeze, get sick, or die.
  • Food District: This provides food and counteracts the hunger penalty.
  • Logistics District: Gives you access to the Frostlands. Build it on the Old Waystations.
  • Industrial District: Used to produce goods or prefabricated parts. These districts can theoretically be placed anywhere.
  • Extraction District: This is necessary for extracting raw materials and other materials. A lack of these basic materials can lead to squalor.

Districts can be upgraded with various improvements to increase their efficiency or improve the well-being of their people. For example, a sawmill improves the supply of raw materials. Filtering systems reduce squalor in residential areas, and automated factories reduce the need for labor.

To keep a district running in the long term, it needs to be maintained. On the one hand, this is done in the form of heat, which comes from the generator. On the other hand, the districts also need materials to be maintained. This brings us to the next point of our Frostpunk 2 Tips.

4) Resources shouldn’t be used up completely

First of all, you should only build as much as you need to meet the current needs of your city. If you build too much in Frostpunk 2, you’ll use up too many resources and run into a shortage that could be your downfall.

Keep in mind that your resources will eventually run out. The game will let you know in time by displaying a depletion indicator. You know you need to find an alternative source as soon as it appears.

And here comes the tricky part: the old district has to be demolished, and a new one with the same function has to be built. In terms of timing, it’s important to ensure that the new district is completed before the resources of the old district are entirely depleted. This way, you can avoid interruptions in your city’s supply.

5) Other resource tips

As a bonus, we want to give you some more helpful information about resources in our Frostpunk 2 Tips and Tricks.

  • Make sure your replacement districts have the same capacity as the previous ones.
  • Take advantage of the rare and usually short periods of overproduction to accumulate resources.
  • The more resource nodes a district has, the longer it will take to deplete them. However, the number of resources you can extract from it each week remains the same.
  • If you can access infinite resource fields with a Deep Melting Drill, your district needs only a single resource tile to function efficiently.

6) Change laws

In Frostpunk 2, tough decisions must also be made. You can change laws or create new ones to manage the economy and society so the city functions optimally. However, some of these must be researched before being presented to the council.

To pass a law, you need a majority vote of the Council. This means that at least 51 of the 100 delegates must vote for your proposal. If you don’t get enough delegates on your side, you’ll have to help them by making deals and concessions.

Find out where the wavering delegates are. Then, make them an offer that suits their interests. For example, you can say that you’ll invest in specific research areas or commission certain construction projects in exchange for their approval. However, you should keep your promises later; otherwise, you will anger the council and turn them against you.

7) Collect Donations

Even in a frozen world where humanity constantly struggles to survive, much still revolves around money. As the game progresses, you’ll find that a shortage of Heatstamps (New London’s currency) is responsible for most of the city’s growth problems.

Of course, your citizens in Frostpunk 2 will pay you taxes. However, these aren’t particularly high and will be even lower than usual if not all your people’s needs are met. Especially if you have expensive construction projects, the money from taxes won’t be enough. The solution: donations.

You can bridge the financial gap by asking for additional funds in one of the communities. This allows you to implement districts or upgrades you couldn’t otherwise afford. The problem with this, however, is that your reputation in the community will suffer somewhat due to your request for donations. So it’s best always to choose a community that is well-disposed towards you and likes you.

The amount of money that can be donated depends on the size of the community. You can expect more Heatstamps from a group with many citizens. It’s best to address some of the needs of the donor group before asking for donations. For example, you might want to pass laws to accommodate the community members.

8) Research Tips

Research in Frostpunk 2 is directly tied to the factions and their respective worldviews. Other research areas will become possible depending on the laws you enact and which faction you choose to oppose. Conversely, you must coordinate your political actions with your research efforts.

9) Anticipate Problems

Once a problem has occurred in Frostpunk 2, it’s usually too late to fix it without harming your city. If a resource source disappears before a new one has been developed, a bottleneck is sure to occur that will cause you problems. Your motto should, therefore, be to keep an eye on all of New London’s systems and anticipate disruptions.

Always have enough fuel for the generator and enough food for your population. If you’re researching a technology that can affect the health of your people, you should also invest in hospitals. Learn to understand how the game’s gears interlock and ensure everything is in balance.

10) Frostpunk 2 Tips on Cornerstones

Finally, let’s take a look at the cornerstones of your city in Frostpunk 2. You should choose an approach and stick with it throughout the game as early as possible. So, make your decisions based on the cornerstone you want to pursue. Specifically, you need to consider the following:

  • Do you adapt to the status quo or focus on progress?
  • Do you value equality, or do you value meritocracy?
  • Do you insist on tradition or act on the principles of reason?

If you’re new to the game, you may be tempted to try to find a balance between the extremes and keep all factions happy. However, based on experience, we can tell you that this doesn’t work. Only if you choose one of the three points for each will your economy, politics, and research be successful.

Be prepared for the groups that don’t agree with your cornerstone to rebel at some point. If this happens, you have done nothing wrong. It’s an intentional part of the game that you must deal with.
