Hollow Knight Silksong Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Are you ready to explore the dangerous kingdom of Pharloom? In our Hollow Knight Silksong tips and tricks, you’ll learn how to master Hornet’s agile movements, manage Rosaries and Shards, and sharpen your combat skills. We also share useful advice on healing, resources, and survival.

Learn the new movement mechanics

Hornet doesn’t handle like the Knight you know from Hollow Knight. Her movement is much more acrobatic and fluid. That means you need to adapt to how she jumps, dashes, and attacks.

A character with a white body and black head jumps on a flower-covered surface. In the background, an ornate cage stands. A projectile flies upward.

Spend some time at the start of the game testing her controls. Learn the difference between a short and long jump and see how far she travels with each. Also, practice her diagonal down attack. Unlike the Knight’s straight-down pogo, Hornet’s move is angled, which changes how you hit enemies mid-air.

Once you understand the jump distance, attack angles, and Needle reach, you’ll feel much more comfortable. Exploring Pharloom then becomes easier, and challenging platforming sections will feel less frustrating. Mastering Hornet’s agility early is crucial to enjoying everything Silksong throws at you.

Master the Bind ability

One of the biggest changes from Hollow Knight is how healing works. The Knight’s Focus spell is gone, and Hornet now uses Bind. At first glance, both do the same thing: they let you recover lost Masks. But Bind has a few quirks you need to learn quickly.

Hollow Knight Silksong tips: A character with a white head and red cloak jumps over a floating platform in a green, lush environment. Plants and glowing points are visible in the background.

The key difference is that Bind can be used mid-air. This aligns perfectly with Hornet’s fast-paced, acrobatic combat style. You can dodge an attack, jump over an enemy, and heal all at the same time.

There’s a catch, though: Bind uses your entire Silk gauge, whether you heal with one Mask or three. Plus, it activates immediately when you press the button, not when you hold it. That means you have to carefully manage your Silk and choose the right moment to heal.

Get the map and other essentials

Exploring Pharloom without a map is a recipe for frustration. That’s why you should find Shakra as soon as you enter a new area. She’s the Silksong version of Cornifer, and she sells everything you need to stay oriented.

A character in green attire with a spear hovers above another character in white armor seated on a throne. The background features a dark, detailed environment with many small figures.

Her shop offers maps, a quill, and a compass. Together, these items are essentially your starter kit for exploration. Without them, moving forward can feel like running in circles. The prices are reasonable too: both maps cost 90 Rosaries, the quill is 50, and the compass is 70.

If you can’t afford them right away, don’t worry. Shakra stays until you hit certain story milestones, so you can farm Rosaries and return later. Eventually, you’ll see her again across most zones with new maps for sale.

Hollow Knight Silksong Tips on Rosaries and Shards

In Silksong, you’ll deal with two main currencies: Rosaries and Shell Shards. Both are crucial for your progression, so it’s important to understand how they function.

Three characters in a game fight in a mystical environment. The left character is red and jumping, while the right character is executing an attack. Blurred lights are visible in the background.

Rosaries are the main currency. Nearly every vendor in Pharloom accepts them, and you’ll obtain them from enemy drops, caches, and Rosary strings. However, there’s a catch: you lose Rosaries when you die. To protect them, you can attach them to a Rosary string or pay certain vendors to keep them safe. Remember, strung Rosaries can’t be spent until you break the string, so save this for long expeditions or dangerous areas.

Shell Shards are different. They’re used for crafting but don’t become relevant until later in the game. Still, it’s smart to gather them early to open up more crafting options later.

Combat tips

Combat in Silksong feels quick and punishing, but with the right mindset, you’ll survive Pharloom’s toughest enemies. Here are some must-know tips:

A game character in combat, surrounded by small red creatures and a large opponent wielding a long spear. Stylized dark structures are visible in the background.
  • Be aggressive: Don’t back away. Get right in a boss’s face and keep chaining attacks. This builds up the boss’s Stagger meter faster, giving you a short window to either deal more damage or safely Bind. While not every boss can be staggered, playing aggressively usually makes fights easier.
  • Practice hit and run: Make a quick strike and then immediately reposition. This “hit and run” rhythm is the core of Silksong combat. Practice on weaker mobs first so it becomes second nature when the bigger threats appear.
  • Heal only when you’re safe: Bind uses your entire Silk gauge, regardless of how many Masks you recover. If you’re interrupted, you still lose all your Silk. Always choose safe moments to heal, and remember that trading health for ability use leaves you vulnerable until you recharge Silk.
  • Use the Cocoon wisely: After death, Hornet leaves a Cocoon holding your Silk and Rosaries. Instead of breaking it right away, save it as an emergency Silk reserve during a tough fight. It’s like having a backup heal when you really need it.
