We had to wait 14 years, but now we can finally step into the shoes of John Marston on our PC and experience one of Rockstar’s most beautiful open worlds. In our Red Dead Redemption Tips and Tricks, we’ll show you everything you need to know to survive in the wild, wild West.

1) How the Dead Eye feature works
Let’s start with the combat system in Red Dead Redemption. One of the most important elements is the Dead Eye feature, which allows you to slow down time and fire targeted shots. Similar to Bullet Time in Max Payne, this feature is time-limited. A red bar next to the minimap shows you how much Dead Eye you have left.
The bar refills automatically as time passes. Headshots help speed up the process. Each headshot you land in normal combat will reward you with a good portion of Dead Eye. Aimless shooting is generally not a good idea in Red Dead Redemption. We recommend you take the time to aim through the front and rear sights and take cover as often as possible.
As in GTA, your character won’t be able to get off many shots before going down. You’ll need the Dead Eye function if you have multiple enemies in close proximity. In the first level, it just slows down time. In the second, you can automatically target enemies, and in the third, you have a manual selection that John will shoot one at a time after the mode ends.
2) Tips for the horse
In RDR2, you developed a special bond with your horse that brought us to tears while playing. RDR1 has a slightly different approach. You can tie a mount of your choice to the front of your house and use it regularly. Basically, you can declare any animal you come across (or that can be tamed) as your permanent or temporary transport.
Some horse breeds are more resilient in combat, while others are faster or more enduring. Depending on your mission type, consider which horse to saddle up with. You can buy special pills in the general store to improve your horse’s stats.
3) Shoot your bounty in the leg
Bounty hunting in Red Dead Redemption has two advantages: it is a lucrative source of income, and it is a lot of fun. Go to the sheriff’s office and pick up a bounty notice to get a job. This should indicate the approximate location of your target.
If the person you are looking for isn’t alone but in the company of trigger-happy friends, you should take care of the members of his gang first. Leave the target alone for now. After all, you only get your money if you deliver him alive. To prevent him from escaping, shoot him in the leg and tie him up.
4) How to heal yourself
John’s HP bar in Red Dead Redemption should fill up by itself. However, if you take a few hits in a gunfight and the screen turns red, you must replenish your health manually. You can do this by taking medicine. This can be bought from any doctor, and you should always have a small supply.
5) Fast travel
Sure, it’s fun to ride across the open prairie. But to complete your missions as efficiently as possible, you should take advantage of the fast travel feature. As part of our Red Dead Redemption tips and tricks, we would like to introduce you to two options.
You can find stagecoaches in every town. The bigger the town, the more stagecoaches are available. Their function is similar to that of taxis in modern open worlds. However, if you’re outside of civilization, you can set up camp and travel from there to a place you have already visited.
6) Buy Bandoleers
Ammunition is the lifeblood of any lawman and is essential to winning gunfights against outlaw gangs. In many missions in Red Dead Redemption, you’ll face a large number of enemies. We recommend purchasing a bandoleer as soon as possible to ensure you don’t run out of bullets. You can buy one anytime from a gunsmith or general store for $125.
7) Red Dead Redemption tips for making money
New bandoleers, ammunition, outfits, medicine, etc., don’t come for free. That’s why we will show you the fastest ways to make money in the Wild West. We’ve already talked about bounty hunting. But there are even more ways to fill your wallet in Red Dead Redemption.
Get more loot from your opponents
Implementing this tip early in the game is best: Go to Armadillo and buy the Rabbit’s Foot from the general store. It will give you 20 percent more money and ammo when searching corpses. The sooner you have it in your inventory, the more you benefit.
Become a hunter
You can earn money by hunting people, but hunting animals is also very lucrative. Furs and meat can be sold for a high price. Take your time and hunt wolves, bears, or elk. It’s best to use the Dead Eye function to take well-aimed shots. The animals will run away if you only wound them.
Mini-games, big rewards
The Five-Finger Fillet mini-game is a good business if you can play it efficiently. The key combinations are the same for every run. So you don’t have to look at John’s hand, just at your controller (or keyboard) to complete them successfully. With the Microsoft controller, they are A and B, A and Y, A and X, A and B, and finally, A and Y again.
At the same time, if you’re playing with a PS controller, they are X and circle, X and triangle, X and square, X and circle, and finally, X and triangle again. Each time you win, you double the bet until you reach the maximum of $100.
Cheat at poker
This tip is morally questionable, but it works very well. Go to the poker table in Blackwater and make a save game. Then start the card game and bet everything you have. If you lose, just load the previous save game. If you win, save again and repeat the process until you have enough money.
8) The most useful outfits
Your clothes in Red Dead Redemption not only change your appearance, but they also affect the characteristics of John Marston. Here is a list of the best outfits and what they do:
- US Marshal Uniform (better treatment by the authorities, free ride on the stagecoach)
- Legend of the West (Dead Eye recharges faster)
- Expert Hunter Outfit (twice as much loot when hunting)
- Gentleman’s Attire (you can play poker for higher stakes)
- Savvy Merchant (everything costs half as much at the Gunsmith)
- Treasure Hunter (the treasure hunter gang will no longer attack you)
- US Army Uniform (you will be recognized as a soldier)
- Reyes’ Rebels Outfit (much lower bounty in Mexico)
- Elegant Suit (cheating at poker possible)
- Walton’s Gang Outfit (you can safely enter Walton Gang hideouts)
