From slaying monsters as Geralt of Rivia to forging your cosmic saga in the depths of space, we’ve got a lineup of the absolute best RPGs that will keep you hooked for countless hours.

1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Let’s start with an obvious choice that everyone should’ve expected on a list of the best RPGs and that we’ve already mentioned in another blog: The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. We’re more than happy that this amazing game has received a next-gen update that allows us to enjoy it in a 60fps performance mode and a 30fps ray tracing mode.

In this epic adventure, you assume the role of Geralt of Rivia, a mercenary monster slayer. At the heart of Geralt’s journey is a compelling quest: to track down Ciri, the Child of Prophecy, a living weapon with the power to reshape the world. The open world is stunning and massive, and you can easily spend hundreds of hours in the game (especially if you get distracted by playing Gwent like we did).

If you’ve been paying close attention, you may have spotted a hint of our next game in The Witcher 3. Ciri speaks of a dimension where flying cars and body modifications are the norm, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the world of…

2) Cyberpunk 2077

CD Project Red just keeps on delivering! If you haven’t picked up Cyberpunk 2077 yet, now is the perfect time to do so with the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty DLC! Enter the neon-lit megalopolis of Night City, where the line between humanity and technology blurs into a vivid cyberpunk tapestry of danger and opportunity.

So gear up, implant your enhancements, and get ready to embark on daring adventures, unravel mysteries, and build your legend amidst the chaos of Night City in one of the best RPGs out there.

3) Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Of course, Bethesda games can’t be missing from any list of the best RPGs. Enter the world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a game that has taken the gaming world by storm and captured the hearts of gamers worldwide. Featuring a vast open world that seems to go on forever, Skyrim is a timeless masterpiece that immerses you in an epic fantasy like no other.

With its stunning world, endless exploration, and limitless modding possibilities, it’s no wonder the game has won over 200 Game of the Year awards. 4) STARFIELD

Let’s stay with Bethesda and talk about their latest release STARFIELD, an open-world sci-fi game and their first game in 25 years that takes place in a new universe. Set in the distant future, humanity has ventured out of our solar system and into the depths of a vast galaxy. You’ll join an elite group of space miners as they search for mysterious artifacts.

In STARFIELD, the most compelling story is the one you create with your own character. With unparalleled freedom, you’ll traverse the vastness of space, exploring over a thousand planets. Glide through bustling cities, infiltrate treacherous bases, and roam untamed landscapes. Are you ready to write your own cosmic saga?

5) Assassin’s Creed Origins

Our favorite Assassin’s Creed game besides Odyssey is Origins. Since we’ve already talked about the former in another blog, let’s dive into the world of Origins. You’ll embark on a breathtaking journey into the heart of ancient Egypt, a realm of majesty and intrigue, where the sands of time hide secrets and forgotten myths.

Step into the sandals of Bayek, the original Assassin, and witness the birth of the legendary Assassin’s Brotherhood. It’s a land where power-hungry factions vie for control, and only those who unravel the darkest secrets can hope to survive. Prepare for an action-packed RPG experience like never before!

6) The Mass Effect trilogy

Let’s leave ancient Egypt and head for the stars with the Mass Effect trilogy. Our personal favorite is the second installment, but we think all three are worth your time. Developed by BioWare, this iconic saga is a shining example of immersive storytelling, unforgettable characters, and the power of player choice in shaping the fate of the galaxy.

Step into the boots of Commander Shepard, a charismatic hero leading a diverse crew of aliens and humans aboard the starship Normandy. Your mission: to defend the Milky Way from the looming threat of the Reapers, ancient machines hell-bent on galactic extinction. What unfolds is a breathtaking blend of sci-fi spectacle, political intrigue, and personal drama, all set against the backdrop of a meticulously crafted universe.

7) Borderlands 2

We just love the Borderlands franchise and think it has its place among the best RPGs. We’ve already recommended Borderlands 3 in our blog about the best open-world games, so let’s talk about its predecessor, Borderlands 2. In this wild and chaotic adventure, you take on the role of one of four new vault hunters, each with their own unique skills and abilities, on a mission to bring down the malevolent mastermind, Handsome Jack.

If you thought the loot in the original Borderlands was impressive, prepare to be blown away. Borderlands 2 features a dizzying array of procedurally generated weapons, shields, grenades, relics, and class mods. With 87 bazillion possible combinations, you’ll never run out of ways to destroy your enemies in style!

8) Divine Divinity

Let’s continue with Divine Divinity, a classic RPG from 2002. This epic role-playing game invites you to embark on an extraordinary journey filled with hack-and-slash action, unparalleled exploration, and a treasure trove of items waiting to be discovered, traded, and wielded.

In the ever-evolving struggle between valiant heroes and the malevolent forces of Chaos, the cult of the Black Ring has harnessed the very essence of destruction. As the prophesied Chosen One, it’s your mission to unite the seven races of Rivellon and ascend to the status of the Divine One, all to thwart the impending birth of the Lord of Chaos.

9) Baldur’s Gate 3

Larian Studios, the developers of Divine Divinity, also brought us the Baldur’s Gate series, including the latest installment and masterpiece, Baldur’s Gate 3 which won Game of the Year in 2023. This game weaves a tale of community and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the irresistible lure of absolute power. Prepare for an epic journey as you gather your party and return to the Forgotten Realms.

Mysterious abilities awaken within you, granted by a Mind Flayer parasite lurking in your brain. The choice is yours: resist the darkness and turn against it, or embrace corruption and become the ultimate evil. Choose from 12 distinct classes and 11 races drawn from the D&D Player’s Guide to forge your own identity. Whoever you become, your path will be paved with adventure, treasure, battle, and the possibility of romance.

10) Fallout 4

the best rpgs: fallout 4

Let’s go back to Bethesda and talk about the Fallout franchise. While our all-time favorite is Fallout: New Vegas, we’ve already talked about that in another blog, so let’s take a look at Fallout 4. If you thought Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were epic, get ready for an experience that takes open-world gaming to a whole new level.

In Fallout 4, you are the lone survivor of Vault 111, in a world forever changed by the ravages of nuclear war. Every moment is a test of your survival instincts, and every decision you make will shape the fate of the desolate Wasteland. Are you ready to rise to the challenge, rebuild civilization, and leave your indelible mark on the world?

If you prefer hunting monsters to trying to survive the apocalypse, MONSTER HUNTER RISE is the game for you. Prepare to become an expert hunter, explore stunning new maps, and wield an arsenal of 14 different weapons as you take on ferocious monsters in a thrilling, all-new storyline. You’ll face a wide variety of monsters, each with its own unique ecology and deadly tendencies. From classic returning favorites to awe-inspiring creatures inspired by Japanese folklore.

Each monster you hunt provides valuable materials for crafting new weapons and armor, or upgrading your existing equipment. This means that the more you hunt, the stronger you become. Whether you prefer a nimble playstyle or a tanky one, customization is the key to success. Are you ready to rise to the challenge, assemble your hunting party, and take down some fearsome monsters?

12) Grim Dawn

You may know Crate Entertainment as the masterminds behind Farthest Frontier. In 2016, they brought us the action RPG Grim Dawn, another title that definitely deserves its place on our list of the best RPGs. In this game, humanity is on the brink of extinction and the world is gripped by an apocalyptic nightmare.

You’ll be thrust into a brutal and unforgiving universe filled with complex character development, a vast array of unique items, crafting, and quests that will have you pondering every choice and consequence. One of Grim Dawn’s standout features is its dual-class system, which allows you to combine any of six different classes with over 25 skills and modifiers per class.

13) FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE

We couldn’t do this list without a Final Fantasy game and chose FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE, a reimagining of a legendary classic, born from the minds of the very creators who brought us the original masterpiece back in 1997. With a captivating blend of traditional command-based combat and heart-pounding real-time action, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.

Picture a world teetering on the brink of destruction, where the sinister Shinra Electric Power Company ruthlessly exploits the planet’s life force, mako, for their own gain. It’s a planet in peril, and the last flickering hope for its salvation rests with a ragtag group of rebels known as Avalanche. Their mission: to halt the relentless march of the Shinra juggernaut.

14) The Outer Worlds

Next up is The Outer Worlds, the award-winning first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. Prepare to awaken from a deep slumber, decades after your colonist ship’s voyage went awry, leaving you stranded on the edge of the galaxy. But this is only the beginning of your adventure.

As you step into the shoes of your chosen character, you’ll soon discover that the Halcyon colony is on the brink of disaster, caught up in a web of conspiracies that threaten its very existence. The fate of this thriving yet precarious colony hangs in the balance, and it’s up to you to determine how the story unfolds.

15) Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Enter the gritty, treacherous world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, where the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance and your journey from humble blacksmith’s son to valiant hero unfolds. As you navigate this immersive open world, you’ll find yourself immersed in a non-linear story where your choices have profound consequences.

The combat in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is as challenging as it is exhilarating. Choose your weapons and perform unique combos from afar, in the shadows of stealth, or face-to-face in merciless hand-to-hand combat. Character progression is essential; improve your skills, earn new perks, and craft or upgrade your equipment to become a formidable force on the battlefield.

16) Persona 5 Royal

The last game on our list of the best RPGs is Persona 5 Royal. This amazing JRPG not only made this list but also made our top three single-player games of 2022. Join the ranks of the Phantom Thieves and embark on a journey to change the hearts of the corrupt.
