The Evolution of TwitchCon
2015: The Birth of TwitchCon
In 2015, TwitchCon burst onto the scene with an unforgettable inaugural event at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Gamers from around the world gathered to celebrate their shared passion while Twitch CEO Emmett Shear set the stage with a keynote address. Each panel was live-streamed for those who couldn’t make it, ensuring that no one missed out on the action.
2016: Leveling Up in San Diego
TwitchCon moved to the iconic San Diego Convention Center the following year and expanded to a three-day spectacle. With big-name sponsors like Xbox, Truth, and Amazon Game Studios joining the fray, the event became a haven for gaming enthusiasts.
2017: A New Arena in Long Beach
TwitchCon 2017 made its mark at the Long Beach Convention Center, introducing esports to the convention for the first time. Gamers went head-to-head in exciting tournaments like H1Z1 Arena and Lineage II.
2018: Star Power in San Jose
In 2018, TwitchCon moved to San Jose, bringing with it a lineup of star-studded speakers and exciting competitions. Icons like Tony Hawk, Kevin Smith, and Ninja took the stage in the new “Twitch Speaks” series, while the Fall Skirmish Fortnite finals electrified the crowd.
2019: Going Global in Berlin
2019 was a year of firsts, as TwitchCon went global with its first European event in Berlin. Gamers from across Europe flocked to CityCube Berlin, where they were treated to motivational speeches, including an appearance by David Hasselhoff. Meanwhile, TwitchCon North America returned to San Diego, debuting a fresh new Twitch brand design and solidifying its place as a staple in the gaming calendar.
2020: A Glitch in the System
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, the gaming convention world faced a major disruption. Both TwitchCon North America and TwitchCon Europe were canceled, but Twitch didn’t let fans down.
Instead, they launched “GlitchCon,” a 12-hour virtual marathon that kept the community connected. With tournaments, talent shows, and a massive donation to AbleGamers, GlitchCon proved that not even a pandemic could stop the Twitch community from coming together.
2022: A Triumphant Return
After a two-year hiatus, TwitchCon returned with a bang in 2022. Gamers reunited in Amsterdam for TwitchCon Europe and later in San Diego for TwitchCon North America. One of the most talked about moments took place at the San Diego party when Megan Thee Stallion took the stage and was joined by a Master Chief cosplayer.
2023: New Frontiers in Paris and Las Vegas
TwitchCon continued to push the boundaries in 2023, with events in Paris and Las Vegas. Paris hosted TwitchCon Europe, while Las Vegas became the first North American event outside California.
2024 and Beyond: The Legacy Continues
As TwitchCon marches into 2024, it shows no signs of slowing down. The event returned to Rotterdam for TwitchCon Europe, introducing new ways to celebrate streamer milestones. With TwitchCon North America set to return to San Diego for the fourth time, gamers are already gearing up for what promises to be another legendary year.
