Are you ready to delve into the darkest depths of humanity? In our Hell is Us tips and tricks, we show you how to navigate without quest markers and maps, how to solve puzzles, and what you need to know about your drone. We also share useful tips on the combat system.
Table of Contents
1) Pay attention to clues in your surroundings
The game doesn’t hold your hand. There’s no map, and special items or objects aren’t marked from a distance. Still, exploration is frustration-free if you know what to look for. Nothing in Hell is Us is just decoration. Every location, item, and piece of information has a purpose and helps tell the story.
If you come across a puzzle, make sure to check every corner and pick up all the interactive items. This might not immediately lead to a good deed (the term for quests in the game), but eventually, each item will serve its purpose and become useful.
2) Puzzles aren’t always solvable immediately
But it’s not just about good deeds; the puzzles in Hell is Us are also not always easy to solve right away. Even early in the game, you’ll face some that seem impossible. Just ignore them for now and return to them later, once you’ve gathered the necessary information or the right item.
If you get stuck, don’t waste time. Make a mental note (or actually keep a notebook) and try something else first. Since there are no alternative solutions, a puzzle can only be solved with exactly the right item or approach.
3) Use fast travel
The APC is your quick travel option in Hell is Us. After Tania joins you, you can talk with her in the vehicle and have conversations. We suggest you regularly revisit previous locations to complete unfinished puzzles and good deeds.
The further you progress in the story and the more information you gather, the more conversation options you’ll unlock with the NPCs. The APC will help prevent backtracking from taking too much time.
4) Always be alert
Be cautious with timeloops in Hell is Us. These large, dome-shaped structures appear in different areas and are typically guarded by enemies. While they are active, the creatures nearby will keep respawning. So, it’s worth deactivating these anomalies as quickly as you can.
Use the Guardian Detector to find them and watch for amine prisms. They are a vital resource for timeloops, and some timeloops even need a particular variant to deactivate them.
5) Use your compass
The core of our Hell is Us tips and tricks naturally focuses on navigation without a map and quest markers. Listen carefully when NPCs give directions during conversations. They usually mention both landmarks and the cardinal directions you need to go.
Then check your compass and walk roughly in the right cardinal direction. Since the hotspots for quests are very distinctive, you’ll recognize them from a distance and can’t really miss them.
The positive aspect of this is that while in other games you just move from one waypoint to another without truly immersing yourself in the world, Hell is Us creates a very special atmosphere through immersive exploration. To enjoy the game fully, you should embrace this type of exploration.
6) Talk to everyone
It’s worth talking to all NPCs in Hell is Us and asking them as many questions as possible. Don’t limit yourself to specific topics related to your current investigation, but also bring up general subjects. This will often give you clues that help you solve puzzles.
You can also trade using found objects. Some NPCs will indirectly ask for specific items. If you’re unsure what they want, try different things. If someone rejects an item, it doesn’t set you back.
7) Hell is Us Tips on drones and glyphs
As you progress through the game, you should strategically use your equipment. You’ll find drone modules everywhere that grant your companion special abilities. These include, for example, distracting enemies or causing area damage. But a powerful storm is also possible.
Each ability has its own cooldown and is shown in the user interface at the bottom right. Since your character’s combat system is focused solely on melee combat (which might seem odd given the war scenario), your drone takes over the missing ranged attacks.
Additionally, you can attach glyphs to your weapons to boost their effects. Some effects drain the life energy of frightened enemies, others save stamina, shoot shrapnel, or pull enemies toward you. Both glyphs and weapons can be upgraded at Victor the Blacksmith in Jova, so it’s worth checking in with him regularly.
8) Combat tips
The fights are usually very tough. Even small groups of Hollow Walkers can be dangerous, especially when they start to glow red and release a haze. When this happens, you must first break the energy dome before the Hollow Walker becomes vulnerable again.
You can either block enemy attacks or dodge them. There are various types of weapons available, which can also be customized with abilities based on four core emotions. It’s best to focus on skills that either deal area damage or stun enemies. This will help you gain the upper hand against groups of multiple Hollow Walkers.
9) How to heal yourself
Your health bar not only shows how much HP you have left but also directly impacts your stamina. That’s why it’s important to restore your life energy regularly. If your stamina reaches zero, your actions will slow down significantly.
Luckily, besides medipacks, you can also recharge your health during combat. But, this depends on timing. Watch for the white ring that forms around your character and press the heal button at the perfect moment. The window for timing is very narrow, and you will need some practice to master the mechanics. However, the payoff makes it worth the effort.
10) Report regularly to Tania
Toward the end of the first act, you’ll meet the journalist Tania. As part of the story, she joins your group and, as already mentioned, can be reached in your APC.
By handing over your found research objects to her, you will gain additional background information about the regions and characters. But more importantly, each object you give her fills a progress bar. Once it’s full, Tania will reveal the location of a vault of forbidden knowledge and provide you with the symbol code to open it.
Since these vaults hold especially valuable equipment, you should visit Tania regularly to check for any new items for her.
