1) Try different weapons
Just by looking at the weapons, you can see that Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t just a pretty copy of Worlds. That’s because many items have additional mechanics that directly affect gameplay. Whether you’re new to the Monster Hunter series or a veteran, we recommend you familiarize yourself with the 14 weapon types.
Roam the Windward Plains training area and take your time to explore and try everything out. You can now also explore the open world with a mount called the Seikret. It allows you to switch between two types of weapons. Equip yourself with a melee and a ranged weapon, or a fast and a slow type to be prepared for different scenarios.
2) Learn how to use your weapon
The number of moves and combos for each type of weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds is vast. It’s best to leave the hint text on and train with your two favorite weapon types as much as possible. It also won’t hurt to check the guide occasionally and memorize the most important shortcuts and abilities.
Go to the Information menu and click on Tutorials and Tips. There you’ll find a section called Weapon Controls. It lists all the combos for all 14 types. Here are the types in detail:
- Great Sword
- Sword and Shield
- Hammer
- Lance
- Switch Axe
- Insect Glaive
- Heavy Bowgun
- Long Sword
- Dual Blades
- Hunting Horn
- Gunlance
- Charge Blade
- Light Bowgun
- Bow
3) Sharpen your weapons
Each time you use your weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds, it becomes a little less sharp. The colors indicate the current level of wear and the point at which it will become completely useless. As the sharpening decreases, so does the range, and your weapon may bounce off your opponent’s skin.
However, if you go into battle with a sharpened weapon, you’ll be able to penetrate the scales of large monsters and reliably attack any part of their body. What’s more, you’ll also deal more damage. So make sure you keep both of your equipped weapons sharp and don’t rush headlong into battle.
4) The best gear for your Palico
Let’s look at how you can best equip your furry combat companion, the Palico, to make it as helpful as possible in Monster Hunter Wilds. After all, it has several skills that it can use to help you. Crafting equipment for your Palico is much easier than for your character, usually requiring only one or two different crafting materials.
Your feline friend has fewer equipment slots than a regular Hunter, and the individual pieces can’t be upgraded. As a result, you’ll create new sets for it less often than for yourself. However, you should remember to go to Gemma occasionally and select the option for new equipment.
With the right skills and armor, your Palico can distract monsters, heal you (e.g. with Vigorwasp Spray), set traps, attack enemies, inflict status effects (e.g. Paralysis), steal items, and gather resources.
5) Always work towards the next upgrade
Your personal equipment is essential in combat, so you should always be working towards the next upgrade. A new feature of Monster Hunter Wilds compared to its predecessor is the ability to choose armor pieces regardless of your character’s body type.
You can now freely switch between male and female designs, or even combine them: for example, a sturdy male hood with a lighter, short-sleeved female piece. Later, layered armor opens up another customization option, but this is purely for aesthetic purposes.
Constantly upgrading your equipment is a core part of the gameplay. New weapons and armor can be crafted from materials obtained from defeated monsters or found in the wild. Be sure to check your crafting options regularly. The game is designed to allow you to grow in strength as you adventure, and your equipment should reflect that.

6) Tips for the new Focus Mode
Focus Mode is a brand new feature, so we need to tell you all about it in our Monster Hunter Wilds Tips and Tricks. In terms of importance, it’s comparable to the wirebug actions in Monster Hunter Rise. It gives you a decisive tactical advantage by highlighting your opponent’s weak points with red glowing effects.
Focused attacks on these weak points not only cause significant damage, but also yield valuable materials. Many weapon types offer mechanical bonuses for destroying the wounds—for example, full essence for the Insect Glaive or increased spirit for the Long Sword.
For advanced hunts, especially against hardened monsters, focus mode will reveal special blue wounds. These must be destroyed to obtain unique materials. The crosshairs allow you to make precise attacks and blocks.
During each battle, watch your opponent’s wounds and use Focus Mode to find out where your attacks will be most effective. This will make the hunt faster and the loot more rewarding.
7) Watch out for weaknesses
Not only should you use your enemies’ wounds to your advantage in Monster Hunter Wilds. There are also individual enemy weaknesses. You can read about them in the Monster Encyclopedia, which you’ll be introduced to as part of the main story. It contains detailed information about each type of monster and how to obtain certain parts.
Each creature in the game world reacts differently to elemental attacks such as fire, ice, water, and thunder. While elements cause direct damage, status effects such as Explosion, Poison, Paralysis, or Sleep build up over time and only take effect after reaching a certain threshold.
Physical weaknesses also vary from monster to monster. Some are susceptible to blades on the head, others on the tail, and others are best hit with hammers or ranged weapons.
8) Use the environment to your advantage
The flora and fauna of the hunting grounds in Monster Hunter Wilds offer you tactical options beyond direct attacks. Small creatures can often serve as natural allies. One example is the Paratoad.
If you disturb this amphibian near a monster, it will release paralyzing substances, giving you valuable attack time. Remember that you’re not immune to the poison. If the venom hits you, you’ll be paralyzed as well.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, environmental interactions have been greatly expanded compared to Monster Hunter World. Keep an eye out for hanging vines that can act as traps, or boulders that you can drop on enemies with your grapple launcher.
9) Monster Hunter Wilds tips on the leveling system
The game structure of Monster Hunter Wilds traditionally follows a clear dichotomy: low rank and high rank. The high rank represents the difficult mode of the game. In this mode, you’ll encounter much more challenging versions of familiar monsters and have to prove your skills. The upside is that the increased challenge comes with improved equipment options.
You’ll be gently introduced to the basic mechanics during the lower ranks, which typically cover the main story. New features are unlocked as you progress, allowing you to learn the complex game system as you go. As you reach higher ranks, a new phase of increased difficulty begins.
Leveling up works very differently from other RPGs. Instead of leveling your character directly with each level, your progress is tied to your equipment upgrades, skills, and hunter rank.
You should focus on the main story and complete optional side missions to increase the latter. You can kill the game’s early monsters more than once to gain experience. It is also useful to complete bounty hunts and expeditions.
10) Pick up everything you can
At the beginning of your career as a hunter in Monster Hunter Wilds, you should collect all the materials you find on your travels. Building up an extensive supply of materials can prevent frustration later on and save you from going on annoying gathering expeditions. In particular, you should never run out of basic materials such as herbs and honey, which are essential for making potions. You’ll need them from the beginning to the end of the game.
However, it’s crucial to gather wisely. Your inventory is limited while you’re hunting. You should regularly store items that you don’t need immediately. A big advantage of this is that you can also use the items you store to create new equipment.
11) Eat as much as possible
Proper preparation is crucial to a successful hunt in Monster Hunter Wilds. In particular, a hearty meal before heading out should be an essential part of your routine. This is the only way to achieve optimal performance in battle. The effects of food will gradually wear off throughout a long hunt. However, you can temporarily replenish your reserves with rations.
Without food buffs, you’ll be much more vulnerable to several things: you’ll die faster, your stamina will diminish, and dodging or sprinting will become a challenge. Your damage output will also decrease, while the damage you take will increase. In addition to eating, you should also complete other routines before hunting: sharpening your weapon, selecting upgrades, and gathering information about the monster.
12) Abilities are more important than their stats
In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, the actual value of your equipment is defined less by its pure stats and more by its unique abilities. These can make or break your hunt, and should be chosen specifically for each opponent.
The Earplugs ability is universally valuable. It protects you from the stunning effect of loud monster roars. On the other hand, Punishing Draw increases the stun effect of draw attacks. You can use it to its full potential against monsters that often flee.
There is now a clearer distinction between offensive and defensive skills. Weapons and armor have more clearly defined abilities, making their combination options more tactical and complex.
13) The Smart Systems
The Smart Systems in Monster Hunter Wilds are features that make the game easier and more convenient. They were present in the previous games and are purely optional. You’re free to use them or not. For example, if you like automating processes, they may be helpful. They may bother you if you want to have all the mechanics in your hands.
One such system is controlling your mount. With auto pathing enabled, you no longer have to steer; your mount will find its way to your destination all by itself. Another system allows you to control which herbs are automatically made into potions when you collect them. Items can also be passively crafted in Monster Hunter Wilds. Used wisely, this feature can save you a lot of time.
