Table of Contents
1) Explore Midgar between chapters
As an aspiring hero, you’ll have many tasks to complete in CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION. These will challenge Zack in many different ways. Therefore, there are a few things you should know that will help you on your way through the adventure. It starts with the fact that you should definitely explore Midgar between the chapters. Here you’ll find a variety of side missions, mini-games, and sub-events.
There are more than 300 of them! However, none of them really last longer than five minutes. They are also optional. To play through the story of CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION, it’s not necessary to do them. However, there are a lot of things to find here that will make the game much easier for you.
In addition, almost every inhabitant of Midgar has something to tell you. So, it makes sense to talk to the various characters and not just the mission givers marked with a gold exclamation point. Not only will you discover new missions, but you’ll also learn some quirky things about the town and its inhabitants.
2) What are the status effects?
The central combat tools in CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION are magic and elemental attacks. Opponents will start using them early on. But you also use them yourself with Zack. Some status effects will occur when you use them. So it makes sense to know them. After all, you can use them to make life difficult for your opponents.
Below we have listed all status effects and their buffs and debuffs, i.e. all positive and negative effects of them.
- Barrier: Causes half of all incoming physical damage to be negated.
- Stun: This debuff prevents you from performing actions for the duration of the debuff.
- Curse: This status effect disables the DMW (Digital Mind Wave), the digital consciousness that runs in the top left of the screen.
- No AP Cost: With this buff, using physical skills cost no AP. See also No MP Cost.
- Poison: When you’re poisoned or poison your enemies, you or they take damage equal to 1/17 of max HP every 4 seconds.
- Critical: All of your physical attacks are considered “critical” and their damage will be doubled
- MBarrier: As with Barrier, incoming damage is halved. This only applies to magical damage.
- Null Magic: Makes you immune to magic damage for some time.
- No MP Cost: The magical equivalent of No AP Cost. You don’t use MP when casting magic.
- Null Physical: The counterpart to Null Magic, giving you immunity to physical damage for a short period.
- Regen: This buff causes your hit points to regenerate over some time.
- Reraise: When Zack dies in combat, this buff automatically resurrects him instantly.
- Stop: This debuff prevents Zack from moving or performing any actions for some time.
- Silence: Silence prevents you from using your magic and limits you to physical attacks.
3) CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION Tips on Materia
What is Materia?
Materia in CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION refers to the magic that flows through the world. There are four categories of Materia that you can use for attacks and spells.
With Zack, you’ll find Command Materia (yellow), Support Materia (blue), Magic Materia (green), and Independent Materia (purple). You can use it to cast spells, unleash devastating attacks on your opponents, or use helpful boosts.
Change your Materia frequently
Once you’ve equipped your Materia with Zack, it will continue to level up throughout your adventures. It will eventually reach the “master level” in its field. This also means that the Materia will have reached its maximum. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that you exchange Materia that have reached their maximum level.
You’ll need a lot of good Materia later in the game when you can fuse them. Melding Materia is not only a key aspect of the game, but it can also make Zack extremely powerful.
That said, it’s obviously important to use your best Materia items in the tougher fights. By the way, at level five, your Materia will be leveled up with the help of Digital Consciousness (DMW). This allows you to quickly build up a decent repertoire of high-level Materia to create extremely powerful builds.
Match your Materia to your opponents
In general, Zack starts with four slots where you can equip Materia. As the game progresses, this number increases to six. The ratio in which you use your Materia Magic and Materia Skills is up to you. However, battles can be difficult if you don’t match your Materia to your opponent. This is why the game has Materia Sets that you can assemble and quickly select when you need them.
Tip: You can’t define the same Materia in different sets. You’ll have to change them when you select them for battle. Alternatively, you can level two Materia of the same type.
Pay attention to the cost of Materia
When using Materia, you’ll quickly notice that they require MP (Magic Points) and AP (Ability Points). The more powerful the Materia you use, or the more powerful the ability, the higher the cost of using it. Now, early in the game, you have the opportunity to use dramatic options by combining two Materia.
Not only does this allow for a lot of experimentation, but you can also create extremely good parts. For example, you can create a whirling attack that will instantly finish off your opponents. You can also get the “-aga spell” early on. At the same time, this means that these new abilities have significantly higher MP and AP requirements. Especially in the beginning, you may find that your use of Melded Materia is limited.
However, you can mitigate this effect somewhat. You can equip Materia which gives you positive buffs. This includes Materia which increases Zack’s MP and AP. Also possible are effects that affect DMW. With a little luck, you may be able to use Materia without having to pay the cost of its use.
Tip: Sometimes it can make sense to save your most powerful Materia variants for later in the game and work with weaker Materia effects instead. This is safer than losing a battle because you run out of resources.
Level up your Materia
As mentioned before, your focus should be on leveling Materia in addition to the main story, especially in the side missions. Not only will you always have enough different Materia for your Materia sets. More importantly, you’ll fill up your supply of Materia that you can then combine. Again, the higher the Materia level, the more powerful the fusion. This can be a challenge, especially with the DMW in mind.
The DMW are the three reels displayed in the top left of the screen. This is where you level up Zack by hitting a certain combination of the same three images. This can happen in quick succession, but sometimes it doesn’t happen for a while.
This DMW system, reminiscent of a gambling slot machine, has been controversial since its introduction. It’s an essential game mechanic, part of the combat system, and can certainly provide surprises. You level up your Materia when a certain combination of numbers appears on the reels.
For example, 222, 333, 444, 555, and 777 each give you two levels of Materia. For 111 it’s one level. In addition, these number sequences have a corresponding main effect. For example, 777 will give you temporary invulnerability, and 444 won’t consume any skill points until the end of the battle.
4) Combat tips
In general, the combat in CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION is quite action-packed. The use of Materia adds some variety. However, Zack will always need some time in combat to trigger Materia’s conditional effects. During this time, you’re temporarily immobile and vulnerable. You should always keep this phase in mind when approaching your battles.
Tip: For the most damage, use your sword to slash into your opponent’s back.
Conserve your health at the beginning of a battle. If the battle lasts long, you may run out of MPs at the end. You’ll regenerate a few points over time, but it won’t be enough to turn the tide towards the end.
5) Collect all chests
When you’re on missions, Zack can find different chests. How many there are in the mission is shown on your screen. Make sure you find all the chests on a mission. Sometimes finding them can be quite challenging. Most of the time you won’t get anything very valuable from them. Often, they are potions or even a Soma. However, there are some chests where you can find really good things. These include various accessories and even Materia.
Most chests on the map are very easy to find. For example, you can assume that if there is a dead end, there will be a chest. However, some chests are much harder to find. So take your time and search the levels carefully. You can also filter chests that you didn’t find in the mission list and search for them later.
6) You don’t have to do everything right away
In CRISIS CORE -FF VII-REUNION, you have a lot of options open to you. From different loadout sets to specific items that open up new quests, bowl chains, chobo feathers, and fearsome enemies. You don’t have to do everything right away, though. In general, you should prioritize the missions that offer the best quest rewards.
Also, you won’t lose the side missions. If you get stuck on one and can’t make any progress, take care of the main story first. You can come back later and try again.
