Since the early access release of the survival horror game in 2013, the farming aspect has changed a lot. Many options have been added, and the mechanics have been tweaked. In our 7 Days to Die Farming Guide, we’ll show you how to become a successful farmer in the latest version of the game.
Table of Contents
1) Why Do You Need to Farm in 7 Days to Die?
Farming allows you to secure a constant source of food. You control what you get and don’t have to go on long searches or scavenging trips.
Growing plants and trees is essential as it allows you to produce high-quality food and improve your overall well-being. You can also sell seeds and harvested produce for additional income.
2) Preparation
To start growing plants or trees in 7 Days to Die, you’ll need some seeds to get you started. You can find some in containers or on the ground in the area. When you cut down a tree, its resources and some seeds will be added to your inventory. But only if it was alive and not dead. Alternatively, you can buy seeds from vendors.
The next step is to prepare your fields. Choose a piece of flat land, preferably near your camp. After all, you’ll need to defend your farm. Then use an iron hoe to plow the ground. You will need 16 pieces of iron and 10 pieces of wood.
Then, choose the seed you want to use and put it in a cultivated field. An image of the future plant should appear. Right-click to plant the seedling.
3) What Should You Grow?
Your choice of plants should be as varied as possible and tailored to your needs. Potatoes and corn, for example, are good bases for food production. They can be found in almost all good recipes for high-quality food and shouldn’t be missing on any farm.
Cotton is needed to make clothes. Aloe is used to create healing items in 7 Days to Die. Grow both as early as possible to ensure your supply. Note that some crops grow taller than others. For example, if you want to plant corn, you need a vertical space of at least four blocks.
4) These Skills Are Useful
In principle, you can farm in 7 Days to Die without improving your skills. However, having the right skills will make it much more efficient. We recommend that you unlock the “Farmer Mastery” perk. This will increase your harvest and allow you to grow more types of crops.
You can harvest two items from wild or homegrown plants at the first level. You also unlock aloe, yucca, goldenrod, and chrysanthemum seeds. At level 2, you can produce your own berry and vegetable seeds. In addition, the cost of agricultural plots is cut in half.
Level three unlocks hop, pumpkin, mushroom spores, and other seeds for your own production, and level four allows you to harvest three items from wild or planted crops instead of two. Finally, you can grow Super Corn at the fifth and highest level.
5) Light
Now, we come to a mechanic in our 7 Days to Die Farming Guide that you should keep in mind if you want to farm indoors. Every plant needs natural light to grow. This isn’t a problem in the great outdoors, but indoors, you need to consider the opacity of your building materials. This determines their transparency.
It ranges from 0 to 15. A block with an opacity of 0 is not transparent at all and completely blocks out sunlight. On the other hand, if the material has a value of 15, it is 100 percent transparent, allowing the sun to shine through. For example, if you use bulletproof glass, your construction will have an opacity of 14 and will be very transparent.
6) Growth Cycle
A plant’s growth cycle in 7 Days to Die is divided into three stages: It starts as a simple seedling, grows the next day, and finally becomes mature and ready to be harvested. However, if you harvest it before it is ripe, you won’t get a crop, only a seed.
During the growth phase, you should protect your plants so they aren’t destroyed. To improve their growth, we recommend rotating your plants so that your soil isn’t depleted. Watering is no longer necessary since the last update.
7) 7 Days to Die Farming Guide: Sowing Tips
You can only sow one plant per block. However, you can grow different species on adjacent blocks. Vertical seeding is also possible by stacking the blocks. This saves space and allows you to harvest more efficiently. If you sow your seeds on uncultivated soil, it will take much longer to harvest. It is also much smaller.
Using uncultivated soil in 7 Days to Die was impossible for a while, and you had to use a farm plot for planting. However, you are now free to design your fields as you wish.
Not all seeds are found in the wild. Some can only be obtained by scavenging or trading. Most seeds take 120 minutes to grow into a mature plant. Some (such as Super Corn or Mushroom Spores) take a little longer. You must wait 180 minutes before you can harvest them.
8) What Seeds Are Available?
- Corn
- Super Corn
- Pine Tree
- Mushroom
- Cotton
- Potato
- Oak Tree
- Blueberry
- Hop
- Aloe
- Chrysanthemum
- Goldenrod
- Yucca
- Blue Spruce Tree
- Pumpkin
9) Harvesting
Now, let’s look at how to get the fruits of your hard work. The first step is to check if your plants are actually ripe. You can do this by hovering over them to see their current phase. If it’s ripe, harvesting is done in the same way as with wild-growing fruit. Press the left mouse button to hit the plant and destroy it.
The block is completely cleared when you harvest a wild plant, and nothing will grow back. It’s different with a homegrown fruit in your farm plot. A seed remains in the box, allowing a new seedling to grow and start the cycle all over again. While harvesting, you can either use your bare hands or a tool.
10) Tips For Your Farm
Here are some helpful beginner’s tips for setting up and maintaining your farm in 7 Days to Die:
- The glow from torches no longer counts as sunlight, so it won’t help you grow anything.
- Focus on Super Corn as early as possible, as it produces very high yields.
- Mushroom spores don’t require a plot, but can be planted anywhere.
- Create farm plots. They require eight pieces of wood, five times nitrate powder, 25 clay soil, and ten pieces of rotting meat.
- Defend your plants from zombies and crop thieves so you don’t lose your harvest.
