Fishing in Yellowstone National Park. That’s the dream. The game world in the latest simulation from developer Expansive Worlds is clearly based on the North American attraction. In our Call of the Wild: The Angler Tips and Tricks, we explain everything you need to know to land the biggest fish.
Table of Contents
1) Explore the surroundings
Fishing is a leisurely and relaxing sport. Even in Call of the Wild: The Angler, it’s important not to rush things and to take your time with your adventure. First, familiarize yourself with your surroundings and take a look around the reserve. It’s best to take a walk and choose a fishing spot that you like and where you feel comfortable.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery and get used to it before you set up your gear. There is a lot to discover and many a spot has interesting surprises in store. Of course, you’ll only find them if you take the time.
Your walks will also unlock fast travel points and provide you with information on fish stocks. Each step you take fills the map with symbols and points of interest. At the beginning of the game, the map looks quite empty. But the more you explore Golden Ridge, the more it fills up.
2) Complete tutorials, favors and challenges
By completing the tutorials in Call of the Wild: The Angler, you’ll improve your skills and gradually become a more experienced fisherman. Just talk to Sophia, the shopkeeper in Diamond’s Peak. The missions are a good introduction to the game, as they familiarize you with the mechanics and are also fun.
To become a Master Angler, you must complete the challenges. These are divided into three categories:
- Fishing challenges (catch a specific fish)
- Map challenges (find a specific location)
- Photo challenges (find the location of a photo and catch a specific fish)
We recommend that you enable location tracking for missions. This will mark the locations on the map when you are near them. In addition to the challenges and tutorials, you should also complete the favors for the warden, Clayton Johnson, to earn experience points and money.
3) Find a good place to fish
Especially if you’re targeting Goldfish or a Rainbow Trout in Call of the Wild: The Angler, you need to go to the right places. No matter what size hooks, baits, and other equipment you have, you won’t catch the big ones everywhere. It’s best to keep track of what fish you’ve caught and where on the map.
There is a handy labeling system to help you keep track. Just click on the spot and go to Add Marker. Select an icon and then click on the marker you just created. In the menu that opens, you can select any type of fish that appears in the game.
The outrigger from the large lake in the northeast has proven to be particularly productive and is also close to the starting area. You can reach it on foot, by car or by boat. Try different spots and always make a trip to the middle of a body of water.
4) Meet the merchant and the warden
The most important NPCs in our Call of the Wild: The Angler Tips and Tricks are Sophia and Clayton. They couldn’t be more different. While the owner of Taylor’s Tackle is a passionate fishing expert, the warden knows more about things outside the water.
Sophia is always open to new gadgets and anything that makes fishing better and more interesting. Clayton, on the other hand, is more traditional and a real cheapskate when it comes to new purchases. By doing him favors and fulfilling his orders, you’ll increase your XP and earn money to spend in Sophia’s shop.
Tell Clayton about the local flora and report any diseased trees or damaged tourist attractions. Then visit the shopkeeper to see if you can buy new equipment, better bait, bigger hooks, or other tools.
5) Fishing tips
Your basic fishing tool in Call of the Wild: The Angler is, of course, the rod. There are three different kinds. For float fishing, you use a spinning rod. It’s an all-rounder and can also be used if you’re not sure which lure to use.
You equip a bait cast route if you want to jig fish with an active bait presentation. If you want to fish long distances with a float, you should use a match route.
In addition to your route, you’ll also need a reel and line to fish with in Call of the Wild: The Angler. The line thickness must match the characteristics of the route. As a rule of thumb, the thicker the line, the heavier the fish that can be landed. As far as baits are concerned, it’s best to use plastic baits for spinning, plastic baits on a hook for float fishing, and soft plastic jigging baits for jigging.
6) Call of the Wild: The Angler tips for fast travel
Fast travel is a very convenient and efficient way to get around in Call of the Wild: The Angler. You unlock the points by exploring the Golden Ridge Reserve. When you approach a fast-travel point, it will immediately appear as a marker.
From each of them, you can request a boat or a car to get around faster, or you can go out on the water. By the way, you’re not allowed to swim. If you go too far into the cool water, you’ll automatically spawn back on land.
7) More tips for the start
The time in Call of the Wild: The Angler can’t be set manually. However, you can change it to some extent in the single-player mode. For example, if you don’t want to fish at night, just restart the game and make sure it’s noon again. Below we have put together a few more useful quick tips for you:
- Use a large hook to exclude juvenile and bronze fish, so you get fewer but more valuable bites.
- Tokens can be exchanged for upgrades at the Souvenir Shop.
- Leave the drag open when you start spinning and close it slowly when you know which fish has bitten.
- If you don’t catch anything, try different hook sizes and depths.
- You can also complete warden missions and write reports from your vehicle. Just press the E button near the event.
- Try to upgrade your initial gear as quickly as possible. The first track doesn’t have very good stats.
