Subnautica 2 throws you into an alien ocean filled with beautiful biomes, strange resources, and massive creatures that can ruin your dive in seconds. In our Subnautica 2 Leviathans Guide, we show you where to find each Leviathan, what makes them unique, and how to survive close encounters.

Collector Leviathan

The Collector Leviathan is one of the earliest real “turn around or die” moments in Subnautica 2. This massive squid-like predator patrols the vast open trench that separates the safer starting region from the later-game areas. You can swim into its territory early, but unless you enjoy being turned into seafood paste, you shouldn’t treat this crossing like a routine exploration trip.

The main reason the Collector Leviathan matters is simple: it blocks your path to important later-game materials. The gap is roughly 500 meters wide, and crossing it without proper preparation is extremely risky.

You can encounter the Collector Leviathan in these areas:

  • Graveyard: Past the wreckage east northeast of the starting region, before you reach the Observatory
  • Observatory: Around the northern edge of the biome
  • Root Canyon: Swimming above the glowing sludge

The creature has loud, terrifying audio cues, and the music changes when it’s nearby. When that happens, you should either prepare for a fight, move quickly, or leave the biome.

How to Survive the Collector Leviathan

Your best chance against the Collector Leviathan is the Tadpole vehicle. It can survive being grabbed by the Collector Leviathan more than once, making it the safest way to cross the trench. Still, you should upgrade it before making the trip.

The most useful upgrade here is the Scout Ray Chassis, which improves the Tadpole’s speed and turning. With it, you have a much better chance of dodging the Leviathan before it grabs you.

Best Tips for Getting Past It

  • Use the Scout Ray Chassis to move faster and avoid grabs
  • Bring a Repair Tool in case your Tadpole takes damage
  • Stay close to the surface, since the Collector usually patrols deeper water
  • Leave the biome if you need to break its aggression
  • Use biomods like Camouflage, Dash, or Electric Discharge to escape more safely

How to Scan the Collector Leviathan

Scanning this thing is risky, but worth it. The Collector Leviathan can be scanned in Subnautica 2 for databank information, and doing so also unlocks the Sonic Echo biomod, which lets you send a sonar pulse to highlight nearby resources.

Here is the safest method:

  1. Approach the Collector Leviathan in your Tadpole and let it turn aggressive.
  2. When it grabs the Tadpole, exit the vehicle and pull out your Scanner.
  3. Scan the Leviathan while it’s busy attacking the Tadpole.
  4. Swim away and get to safety. You can repair the Tadpole afterward with your Repair Tool.

You can also make this easier by using a Distraction Flare or the Camouflage biomod. The key is to let the Tadpole take the hit while you grab the scan and get out alive.

Shiver Leviathan

The Shiver Leviathan currently appears outside the Early Access map in Subnautica 2 and makes it clear very quickly: you’re not supposed to be there yet.

Large fish-like blue-green sea creature with ribbed head and multiple fins surrounded by two small futuristic diving robots

Its design is hard to forget. The Shiver Leviathan looks almost like a giant bird gliding through the water, with outstretched wings and smooth, sweeping motion. Then you see the skull-like head, the shiny, pearl-like orbs on its cheeks, and the smaller males clinging to the massive females, and the whole thing suddenly becomes a lot less elegant.

You can find the Shiver Leviathan in:

  • The Void: Outside the red border of the current Early Access area
  • Out of bounds regions: Away from the playable map
  • Groups: Females are larger, while smaller males often stay attached to them

The important point is that these creatures are extremely deadly. If you swim too far beyond the border, they will come for you, and fighting them isn’t the plan.

How to Scan the Shiver Leviathan

Scanning the Shiver Leviathan in Subnautica 2 is possible, but it’s risky because you must deliberately step outside the safe area. The best approach is to use the red border as your escape line and rely on the Camouflage biomod to avoid being spotted too quickly.

Here is how you can do it:

  1. Swim into the out-of-bounds area and wait for the Shiver Leviathan to appear.
  2. Move back toward the red border, but don’t cross back inside yet.
  3. Let the creature get close enough for scanning range.
  4. Activate the Camouflage biomod and use your Scanner while it approaches.
  5. If it attacks, immediately swim back inside the border to stop its aggression.

Shiver Leviathan Survival Tips

  • Don’t explore the Void for resources, since there are currently no real points of interest outside the border
  • Use the red border as your safety net if you want to scan it
  • Equip Camouflage before attempting a scan
  • Don’t fight it, because the group can tear you apart very quickly
  • Return inside the map as soon as it becomes aggressive

Deepwing Brooder Leviathan

The Deepwing Brooder Leviathan is easily the calmest leviathan in Subnautica 2, but it’s not easy to find. It can appear in different biomes across the map, making every sighting feel a little more special. You’ll usually spot Deepwing Brooders swimming in small groups near the surface. They glide peacefully through the water, dropping egg clumps as they go, almost like giant living supply crates with wings.

You can find the Deepwing Brooder:

  • In any biome, since it has no fixed spawn location
  • Near the surface, usually around 50 to 100 meters deep
  • In groups of three, slowly roaming through the water
  • Near the red border in some biomes, but not far enough to enter Shiver Leviathan territory

There is no threatening music, no warning roar, and no sudden attack. Because they are passive, you might swim past them without realizing you just found one of the game’s most unusual Leviathans. It’s rare, peaceful, and useful, especially because it drops Deepwing Egg Clumps that you can collect and use to make Pavlova. In a game full of things that want to eat you, this Leviathan is a welcome change of pace.

How to Scan the Deepwing Brooder Leviathan

Scanning the Deepwing Brooder in Subnautica 2 is simple once you find it.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Use a Tadpole or Wakemaker to catch up, since they’re often on the move.
  2. Swim close and bring out your Scanner.
  3. Scan the Deepwing Brooder while it continues swimming.

Great Jaw

The Great Jaw is one of the stranger Leviathans in Subnautica 2, waiting like a giant living trap. At first glance, it looks like an enormous clam nestled between the rocky spires of the Tufa Towers biome. Swim too carelessly inside its shell, though, and the whole thing can snap shut around you. If you get trapped inside, the Great Jaw releases toxins into its shell, damaging you as you try to escape.

You can find the Great Jaw here:

  • Tufa Towers: Southwest of the Lifepod
  • Near wreckage: In an area with rocky spires rising from the seabed
  • Inside its shell: Valuable materials and scannable objects can be found inside

How to Scan the Great Jaw

The good news is that scanning the Great Jaw in Subnautica 2 is much easier than dealing with most hostile Leviathans. You don’t need to swim inside the shell to complete the scan.

Here is what to do:

  1. Approach the Great Jaw from the outside.
  2. Face its large shell directly.
  3. Scan it from a safe position without entering the trap.

Great Jaw Survival Tips

The Great Jaw becomes dangerous when you trigger the tendrils near its central organ. If those tendrils are disturbed, the shell closes, trapping you inside. This is especially risky if you’re looting the area or trying to collect resources from inside the creature.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Avoid touching the tendrils near its central organ
  • Move slowly and carefully when scavenging inside
  • Use the Air Bladder topull you upward if the shell begins to close
  • Equip Improved Fins to swim out faster
  • Use the Wavemaker if you need extra speed
  • Wait until the shell opens again before going back in for loot

Great Jaw Uses and Resources

The Great Jaw is risky, but it’s worth checking out because its shell can contain useful materials and scannable equipment. You can find Lithium deposits inside that can be broken with the Sonic Resonator or the Feedback Resonator.

You can also collect:

  • Lithium
  • Metal Salvage
  • Salvaged Titanium from processed Metal Salvage
  • Portable Oxygen Generator fragments

The World Tree

The World Tree is currently the strangest Leviathan in Subnautica 2, largely because it doesn’t behave like one. It’s classified as a titan-class Leviathan, and if it ever becomes active, it could be the largest creature in the game. For now, though, it’s more mystery than monster.

Large fantastical tree with thick gnarled trunk and rounded mossy canopies rising from the water

From a distance, it looks less like an enemy and more like a gigantic mushroom growing out of the sea. There’s clearly something important about it, but in the current Early Access version of Subnautica 2, there isn’t much you can actually do with it yet.

You can find the World Tree here:

  • Northeast of the Lifepod
  • Around 2414 meters away
  • Near the coordinates 164409, 264789, 2
  • Beyond the current playable area
  • Outside any finished biome for now

How to Reach the World Tree

Reaching the World Tree in Subnautica 2 is the real challenge. It sits beyond the red border, so you must travel through the Void and contend with Shiver Leviathans along the way. This isn’t a typical sightseeing trip. It is more like trying to visit a landmark while the ocean sends murder birds after you.

Before you go, prepare properly:

  • Bring a Wakemaker for fast travel
  • Equip an Air Bladder in case you need to rise quickly
  • Use a Tadpole if you are ready to repair it repeatedly
  • In Creative Mode, use a Tadpole with the Scout Ray Chassis or a Wakemaker
  • Expect constant Shiver Leviathan pressure once you pass the red wall

Here is the basic route:

  1. Prepare your gear before leaving the safe area.
  2. Swim northeast from the Lifepod toward the World Tree on the horizon.
  3. Cross the red border into the Void.
  4. Keep moving while avoiding Shiver Leviathans.
  5. Approach the World Tree once you have cleared the worst of the chase.
  6. Use the Air Bladder or climbable roots to stand on it.

How to Survive the Trip

The biggest danger isn’t the World Tree itself. It’s the Shiver Leviathans that patrol beyond the border. In Survival Mode, they will chase you as long as you remain outside the playable area.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Don’t stop in open water unless you’re trying to break a Shiver Leviathan’s focus
  • If one has locked onto you, wait until it turns away, then move
  • In Multiplayer, one player can bait the Leviathan while the others continue forward
  • Keep an eye on your oxygen and escape tools
  • Do not expect useful loot or objectives once you arrive

Can You Scan the World Tree?

At the moment, you can’t scan the World Tree itself in Subnautica 2. You can scan a part of it called the Titan Rockbore, but it doesn’t seem to have any known use in Early Access yet.
