One of Bethesda’s best games ever is now shining in new splendor with updated graphics. Our The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered tips and tricks cover everything you need to know about this exceptional RPG. We’ll explain how guilds, combat, skills, and the quest system function.
Table of Contents
1) Join a guild
Traditionally, The Elder Scrolls games allow you to join different guilds. Joining one of these communities is completely optional and not required as part of the main quest. However, we recommend that you try to get accepted. This is because the guilds offer exciting and sometimes very complex quest lines that you would otherwise miss out on.
Although the factions in Oblivion Remastered have different goals and moral codes, you can, in theory, join any of them. While you are treated as a noble warrior in the Fighters Guild, you can also be a treacherous assassin in the Dark Brotherhood or a raider in the Thieves Guild.
You can join the Fighters and Mages Guilds by speaking to one of their representatives. If you wish to become a member of the Arena, you must talk to Owyn in the Imperial City and select Arena Armor. To attract the attention of the Dark Brotherhood, kill a civilian and go to sleep. The Thieves Guild will approach you once you’ve been jailed for robbery.
2) The best skills to start with
After each level up, you can improve three of your attributes. How good you are at each depends mainly on the avatar you choose at the start. There was even a difference between male and female characters in the original Oblivion. This has been changed for the Remastered Edition.
Regarding skills, we recommend learning Stealth, Acrobatics, Marksman, and Heavy Armour. Speechcraft, Block, and Illusion can also be useful. Mercantile will also help you get better prices. If your skill level is below 25, you’re considered a novice. At 50, you’re an apprentice, and at 75, you’re a journeyman. After that, you become an expert, and at 100, you become a master.
You should increase your eight attributes to match your favorite skills, as they influence them. Strength and agility are essential for weapon use, intelligence and willpower for spellcasting, and personality or charisma for your oratory and trading skills.
3) Find a free place to sleep
Even though there are plenty of beds in the towns of Oblivion Remastered, you can’t just lie down anywhere and close your eyes. Your character can only sleep in a bed that doesn’t belong to anyone else. And sleeping is important for leveling up. The obvious solutions are to rent a room or buy a house.
As money is scarce at the beginning, we’ll give you a third option: In the harbor area of Imperial City, you’ll find an abandoned hut. Two NPCs live there and will ask you to leave. But they won’t do anything if you rest in one of the sleeping bags.
4) Beware of vampires
Many diseases in Oblivion Remastered can be contracted in combat or from the environment. One of them, however, has a particularly significant effect on the course of the game: vampirism. If you don’t want to become a nasty bloodsucker yourself, you should be careful when fighting vampires. They can infect you quickly, and if you don’t do anything, you’ll become one of them within three days.
If you miss the deadline, you must complete the Vampire Cure quest. Once you’ve done it, you’ll receive a potion to cure you of Porphyric Hemophilia.
5) Raid nearby dungeons
The best way to get money and new equipment quickly is to raid dungeons. In our The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered tips and tricks, we recommend a few that will help you progress quickly, especially in the first few hours of the game, and are easy to complete. Over a hundred of them are all over Cyrodiil, and the monsters that guard them can be pretty challenging.
The Rockmilk Cave, north of Leyawiin, is an easy place to start. There, raiders and bandits are fighting each other. This means half the effort for you, but twice the loot. The Robber’s Glen Cave is also easy to deal with. The only enemies are goblins. You’ll find it near Bravil. Inside, you’ll find a boss chest and ten regular chests to loot.
Be sure to visit the sewers in Imperial City. The first cave is in the south-eastern area, where you’ll be released into the open world after the first few minutes of play.
6) Oblivion Remastered tips: Talk to the NPCs
Make it a habit to talk to every NPC you come across in Oblivion Remastered. Even those who don’t have direct quests for you can often tell you rumors. This will give you hints about ongoing investigations or new quest givers. It’s also a great way to learn more about the world and immerse yourself in the game.
You can also ask NPCs for directions and other information. This will save you from backtracking and reduce your time searching for unknown locations, people, or items.
7) Make potions
Having some healing potions and other items with you is always good. But there’s another reason to get into alchemy: it’s a safe way to make quick cash. Brewing is an efficient alternative, especially if you find combat too difficult or too long.
You’ll need a mortar and pestle to make basic potions in Oblivion Remastered. It’s best to join a Mages Guild to access new ingredients easily. You can then sell the potions you make to various merchants.
8) Merchants won’t buy stolen goods
Unlike other games, merchants in Oblivion Remastered can tell if your goods are stolen or not. If you want to get rid of something stolen, you won’t have any luck with normal merchants. It’s also very dangerous to carry stolen goods. If the guards search you and find anything, you’ll be charged with a crime. Any goods in question will also be confiscated.
It’s best to find a fence to turn to if you’ve obtained items by less than legal means. For example, you can join the Thieves Guild and trade with Ongar in Bruma after passing the final test. The more quests you complete for the guild and the higher your rank, the more fences you’ll unlock. Initially, you can only sell items worth up to 600 gold to Ongar. Larger transactions are possible with the other fences.
9) Get a horse
The world map in Oblivion Remastered is vast, and there are many large areas to explore. To speed up your exploration, you’ll need a horse. You’ll usually find stables in towns where you can buy a mount. However, this is expensive, so we recommend getting a free horse to start with.
Talk to Jauffre and Prior during the main quest and ask them for help. They will give you supplies, armor, basic weapons, and a horse. Although it’s relatively slow compared to other mounts, it will serve you well as a newcomer. You’ll always be faster on it than on foot.
10) Always carry lockpicks
In the dungeons alone, hundreds of chests are waiting to be opened and emptied. However, most of them are locked and need to be picked. Of course, this can only be done with a lockpick. So keep some in your inventory in Oblivion Remastered and don’t be stingy when buying more.
Even if you don’t want to join the Thieves Guild and become an honorable citizen, you’ll still need your dexterity occasionally. Be sure to invest a skill point in Security regularly.
