The latest installment in the JRPG series is arguably the most action-packed and brutal part of the franchise. Our Final Fantasy 16 Tips and Tricks show you how the skill system works, which tricks and gimmicks you need to know, and how to win the battles.

1) Accessory tips
No matter what difficulty level you choose, you can equip up to three accessories at a time in Final Fantasy 16. However, if you decide to play in Action mode, you will have to set them manually. The accessories have different properties that will help you in battle.
There are five in total. Depending on your play style, you can choose your favorites. Here are the items in detail:
- Ring of Timely Assistance: Your pet dog, Torgal, will help you with all your attacks (of course, this is only available after your party’s dog has joined you).
- Ring of Timely Healing: You’ll automatically use a healing potion whenever your HP reaches critical levels.
- Ring of Timely Strikes: You can perform quick attack combos with a single button press (square or X).
- Ring of Timely Evasion: Dodging is automatic, except for attacks that can’t be dodged.
- Ring of Timely Focus: When an opponent makes an attack that you can dodge, a slow-mo begins. Press R1 during this time window, and the dodge will be successful.
You can use the slots for other items instead of the accessory rings. However, we recommend leaving the Ring of Timely Assistance on at least, as it automatically triggers Torgal’s commands. This will make combat much more accessible.
2) Complete the side quests
Even though it’s not an open world this time, there are plenty of side quests, as is typical for Final Fantasy. Many are simple fetch quests à la: Go to point A, kill everything there, collect item B, and then bring it to point C. There are usually only measly rewards for this, so they are only really worthwhile if you want to play through the game 100%.
However, you shouldn’t completely ignore the side quests in Final Fantasy 16. Some of them are really well written and give you great loot if you complete them. You can recognize these special side quests by the plus sign. We recommend that you complete all of these plus quests. One of them even has a mount waiting for you at the end.
3) Visit the hideaway regularly
Following on from the previous tip, you should visit your hideaway regularly in Final Fantasy 16. You’ll receive additional missions (such as the Plus Quests) and learn much about the world and its inhabitants that you would otherwise miss. The hideout also provides a safe retreat between battles and serves as a hub.
From time to time, the hideout will provide you with new materials and interesting conversations. And there is another special gimmick: Parallel to the main storyline, your hideaway constantly adapts to the current situation. Surprises are literally pre-programmed.
4) Pet Torgal
Your loyal dog is not only a great fighting machine. He’s also cute and cuddly. So, do him the favor of petting him once in a while. Do this five times, and a new achievement icon will appear.
It’s one of the easiest to get in Final Fantasy 16. You must press X (or A on Xbox controllers) five times and watch the cute cutscene. Torgal is either being cuddled, or Clive is throwing him a treat.
5) Use the Tomes & visit Harpocrates
The developers of Final Fantasy 16 were clearly inspired by Game of Thrones when it came to the story. Not only has the story become much darker, more violent, and more sexually explicit. It’s also much more convoluted than in the previous installments. You are thrown in at the deep end right at the beginning, with dozens of names and political entanglements thrown at you.
The Tomes will help you keep track of everything. We recommend reading them regularly to know how the characters relate to each other and who is being talked about. Keep visiting Harpocrates in your hideout. This will unlock more entries that will give you even more helpful information.
6) Monster hunting is worth it
Do you want to farm experience points and Gil in Final Fantasy 16? Then, monster hunting is a valuable activity for you. You can use the hunting board and accept missions from the second time jump.
If you kill a monster with a high rating (e.g., A or S), you’ll quickly earn tens of thousands of Gil and advance a level or two.
7) Break the opponent’s stance
Below the red HP bar of a boss or strong opponent in Final Fantasy 16, there is a thin yellow line. This marks your opponent’s stance. If it goes to zero, your opponent will fall to the ground and be entirely defenseless for a few seconds. Tactics are required here. You don’t want to waste any of your Esper abilities right before the stance is broken.
Save your strongest combos and attacks for the moment of weakness, and then give it everything you’ve got. Some skills can also directly affect your opponent’s stance.
8) Final Fantasy 16 Tips: Dying is okay
The death mechanic in Final Fantasy 16 is solved interestingly and can be used to your advantage. If you reach phase 2 in a boss fight and die in this phase, you’ll jump right back into this part of the fight after your death. The good thing is that all your potions will be restored.
So if you realize that you can’t win a fight, use all your potions to at least get to the next phase, then intentionally die and start the phase again with your powers restored. Especially on the higher of the two difficulty levels, the fights can sometimes get really brutal.
9) Dodging and Parrying
Let’s take a closer look at the Dodge mechanic. By default, pressing R1 will make you step to the side. This also works in the air if you’re in the middle of a jump. Keep an eye out for red semicircles during combat. These signal that an enemy is about to attack you, and you have a short window of time to dodge and parry if necessary.
If you manage to dodge in time, you can quickly counterattack by pressing Square (or X on Xbox controllers). When fighting shielded enemies, you can use the mechanic proactively. Press R1 to change your position, then attack your opponent’s unprotected spot.
