Gothic 1 Remake Tips to Survive the Valley of the Mines

Gothic 1 Remake throws you into the colony with barely any gear, no real allies, and plenty of things that can kill you quickly. This guide gives you the most useful Gothic 1 Remake tips, from surviving fights and choosing a camp to finding food, and smart ways to build your character.

Talk to Diego

In Gothic 1 Remake, Diego is your first real contact in the colony, and you should treat him as your early-game lifeline. Most people here want something from you. Diego is one of the few who actually give you something useful first. Don’t rush through his dialogue. He gives you a better sense of the camps, the power structure, and the kind of people you will be dealing with.

Diego is useful because he helps you:

  • Understand the different factions
  • Find your first proper direction
  • Open up early side content
  • Reach level 2 faster
  • Start shaping your build

When Diego offers to lead you to the Old Camp, go with him. The walk is slow, but it’s much safer. Early monsters can mess you up fast, and Diego can clear the path while you get a feel for the world.

At the Old Camp, talk to Thorus at the gate first. Then return to Diego to begin Casting Shadows. This is also where he becomes even more useful, as he can convert your Learning Points into Strength or Dexterity. Spend those points carefully. They determine which weapons you can use and how quickly your character becomes more than just another unlucky newcomer in the colony.

Collect Everything

In Gothic 1 Remake, your pockets should never stay empty for long. If something is lying around and its name isn’t shown in red, grab it. The colony is harsh enough already, so every mushroom, herb, tool, cup, and random plate can help you get ahead.

Your inventory in Gothic 1 Remake gives you plenty of room, so there is no real reason to leave useful loot behind. Some items can be sold for Ore Nuggets, while others might come in handy for favors, trades, or side quests later on.

Early on, you should pick up:

  • Plants and berries
  • Meat and food items
  • Tools and weapons
  • Ore Nuggets
  • Chest contents
  • Cups, plates, and other sellable junk

On your way to the Old Camp, keep an eye out for the first mineshaft you pass. There should be a Pickaxe inside, which is a decent first weapon if you have nothing better. Further down the path, check the area near the broken wagon. You can find Ore Nuggets on the ground there. This is the main currency in Gothic 1 Remake, so don’t walk past them.

After dealing with the first patrolling Juvenile Scavenger, look under the nearby hanged man. You can pick up an Old Sword, which hits harder than the Pickaxe and gives you a much better start in early fights.

Combat Tips

Combat in Gothic 1 Remake is rough at the start. You have weak gear, barely any protection, and even basic enemies can drop you fast on Gothic difficulty. Play carefully until your character can actually take a hit.

Two men in medieval clothing with weapons stand in a rocky forest clearing with grass and bushes.

The golden rule is simple: fight one enemy at a time. If two or three creatures reach you at once, the fight can turn ugly in seconds.

Use these basics early on:

  • Pull enemies away from groups
  • Run back until only one keeps chasing you
  • Lock on with Tab to stay focused
  • Dodge first when fast creatures leap at you
  • Avoid trading hits unless you know you can survive

Blocking helps, but it doesn’t prevent all damage. It only reduces it. Dodging is usually safer in Gothic 1 Remake when timed well, especially against wolves, snappers, and adult scavengers. A good early tactic is to strike enemies as they rush in. A quick stab or a heavy slam can interrupt their charge and give you control of the fight.

Later, combat opens up more. Gothic 1 Remake uses four attack directions, and those inputs become important once you start unlocking combos. At the beginning, though, your timing matters more than fancy moves.

Don’t ignore these combat upgrades:

  • Get armor from your camp as soon as possible
  • Upgrade it at a blacksmith when you have enough Ore
  • Try magic early if melee feels too punishing
  • Use ranged attacks once you have access to them

Magic can make the early game much easier. In the Old Camp, completing The Price of Magic can reward you with a Fire Bolt rune, giving you a strong ranged option before you are comfortable in close combat.

One more thing: creatures in Gothic 1 Remake die when defeated, but human enemies usually go down first. You can loot them while they are on the ground, though they may get back up. In larger fights, finishing them off can prevent the same enemy from becoming a problem twice.

Food Guide

In Gothic 1 Remake, food is your best friend when you’re broke, undergeared, and one bad bite away from a reload. Berries help a little, but proper food keeps you alive much longer.

Start by checking your new shack. You can find Ham inside, which restores more health than basic plants. After that, leave the hut and head toward the wooden structure ahead. Go up the ramp on the left and check the table at the top for more food.

Early food worth grabbing includes:

  • Ham
  • Cooked meat
  • Grub
  • Meatbug Ragout
  • Any free food with non-red item text

Raw meat is useful, but cooked meat is much better. If you have meat from Molerats or Scavengers, take it to a pan in the Old Camp. You can find pans near your hut, near Diego, and in several other locations around the camp.

Cooking meat is always worth it because it gives you food that:

  • Restores more health
  • Sells for more Ore
  • Can be placed on your hotbar
  • Helps you survive longer trips outside camp

For cheap healing, Grub is one of your best early options. Keep quick food on your hotbar so you don’t have to dig through your inventory while you’re bleeding.

Also, complete Snaf’s Recipe when you can. After that, Snaf gives you three Meatbug Ragout each day, which is a great free source of healing in the early game.

Choose a Camp

In Gothic 1 Remake, there are three camps, but you can officially join only one. Your choice affects certain quests, your armor, and your later rank, but it doesn’t completely lock you out of the rest of the world.

Several people kneel on a stone circular platform before a person standing with raised arms, surrounded by rocks and ruins.

You can still visit the other camps, talk to people there, complete certain quests, and keep receiving useful daily items. So don’t treat this as a choice that ruins your save. It’s more about the kind of character you want to play.

The three camps offer different paths:

  • Old Camp: the safest pick for many players. It’s central, easy to reach, and full of vendors and trainers, offering strong armor options. It’s also great if you want early access to fire magic.
  • New Camp: a good fit if you like the thief and mercenary themes. It has a cooler rebel vibe, plenty of ways to earn Ore, and useful trainers for skills such as lockpicking, archery, and one-handed combat.
  • Swamp Camp: the cultist route. It works best if you like the Sleeper theme, the Templar progression, and a combat style that blends weapons with magic.

Joining a camp can cause some quests from other factions to fail, but the main story still follows a similar path. Choose the camp whose style, armor, and roleplay appeal to you most.
