After two years of waiting, the next installment of the action-adventure series has finally arrived on PC. In our God of War Ragnarök Tips and Tricks, we’ll show you what’s changed from the previous installment, how combat works, and what to look out for as the Fimbulwinter draws to a close.

1) Complete Side Quests

You can learn even more about the characters in the game and experience exciting stories by completing side quests. Some side quests in God of War Ragnarök are incredibly witty, each rewarding you with experience points and valuable items.

God of War Ragnarök Tips: Complete Side Quests

Favors are usually found by talking to all the NPCs in the area or listening to your companions’ comments after completing a main quest.

2) Search for Hidden Paths

Dare to leave the main paths and explore every corner of the nine realms. This will help you unlock secrets and discover Nornir and normal and legendary chests. This is where you’ll find all the collectibles and other items that will help you reach 100%.

Sometimes, however, you may not be able to fully explore an area right away. Return later when you’ve gotten the upgrades you need to overcome the obstacles.

3) God of War Ragnarök Tips on Equipment

When it comes to equipping your character, God of War Ragnarök does many things differently than its predecessor. For example, the rarity system has been completely overhauled. This means that in the new God of War, you can level any item up to level 9. In other words, if you really like a piece of armor, you can keep it until the end.

With virtually all items now legendary, you’ll no longer find yourself in a situation where your stats are too good for an item. This also ensures you can play with various play styles at each power level.

If you’re not interested in the stats behind the armor, we recommend that you use automatic equipping. Just go to the armor menu and hold down the left stick if you’re using a controller. You can do the same thing in the weapons menu.

4) Unlock Weapon Perks

From the start of the game, you’ll have two weapons at your disposal: the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. We recommend that you switch between the two. For example, the axe is good for one-on-one combat, while the blades are better for group combat.

As you use both weapons, you’ll unlock perks for each that give you new abilities. You can choose from increased damage potential, a stunning blow, or other status effects. Complete all weapon missions to receive all upgrades.

5) Sell Items

Don’t be afraid to sell your artifacts and other collectibles in in God of War Ragnarök. Once they’re in your inventory, they’ll continue to count toward your 100% status in the menu even after you sell them. You can also trade these items to the blacksmiths for hack silver, which you can use to upgrade your weapons and armor.

6) Combat Tips

Now we come to the core element of our God of War Ragnarök tips and tricks. After all, combat is the core element of the game. Let’s start with your son. Even if Atreus doesn’t seem crucial to the fight, he’s a helpful companion. As soon as he can shoot arrows, you should use him in combat. As the game progresses, his skills with the bow will increase.

During battles, watch out for red rings. These indicate that an attack can’t be blocked or parried. If you’re hit by one of these, it can trigger Burn, Bifröst, or Poison. All three have a negative effect on your HP bar. So, dodge in time to avoid the status effects.

As for blocks and counters, Kratos uses his shield. If it’s a yellow circle, you have a small window to block the attack without taking damage. If it’s a blue circle, you must complete two blocks successfully.

7) Look for the Yggdrasil Rope

If you played the prequel, you’ll remember the blue drops hanging from the trees above the water. Tell your son to collect them from the canoe. Each Yggdrasil Rope drop will give you +2 to one of your stats.

8) How to Gain Skills

Both Kratos and Atreus have their own skill trees in the menu. As you fight and defeat enemies in God of War Ragnarök, you will gain experience points to invest in your skill trees. You’ll also find smaller tasks in the skill menu that will reward you with additional experience points for using your newly acquired skills.

Sometimes, you just have to use the skill a certain number of times, and sometimes, you have to kill enemies in a certain way.

9) Stop by Niflheim

Go to Niflheim from time to time and visit the Raven Tree. As in the prequel, there are feathered spies of Odin in Ragnarök that you must find and collect feathers from. The more you collect, the more reward chests you’ll unlock under the Raven Tree in God of War Ragnarök.

You can recognize the tree itself by the branches that mark its trunk. If you find all 48 ravens in the game, a special surprise awaits you in Niflheim.

10) Axe vs. Blades

You should use both starting weapons alternately, depending on the situation. The blades have a large range. This allows you to hit multiple enemies at once. If you’re outnumbered, you should use them. You can equip them with the Burn status effect to increase their effectiveness.

The Leviathan Axe is a weapon that delivers powerful, targeted blows. Use it to deal a lot of damage to bosses, mini-bosses, and other single opponents. You can enhance it with the Frost status effect. However, if you encounter an enemy that seems resistant to the axe, you should use the fire of your blades.

11) Draugr Holes Are Worth Your While

In many areas in God of War Ragnarök, you’ll come across glowing holes in the ground. Nasty mini-bosses jump out of these Draugr holes. Taking them on is optional, but we recommend killing the monsters.

If you’re not ready for them, move on and return later. New blacksmithing materials or weapon upgrades await you as a reward for killing them.

12) Look out for sparkling water

It is not only the blue Yggdrasil rope that can be found on the waterways. You can also collect floating barrels and other loot. If you see a glow on the water’s surface, you can instruct your son to fish out the loot. Sometimes, you’ll get new crafting materials, but sometimes, you’ll get other upgrades.
