First Things First: Unlock Farming
You can’t start farming in Windrose right away. The system is locked behind story progression, so even if you reach the right area early, your discoveries won’t unlock yet. To avoid wasting time, complete the required step first.

How to unlock farming:
- Follow the main story through the Coastal Jungle.
- Defeat the Coastal Jungle Boss.
- Sail southeast to the Foothills.
- Look for Fertile Soil and an Ancient Farm.
- Make sure you have at least a Copper Pickaxe to mine the soil.
What you should keep in mind:
- Don’t rush to the Foothills too early: You can visit the area before the boss is down, but farming-related discoveries won’t unlock yet.
- The Coastal Jungle is your true checkpoint: Farming progression is tied to clearing that boss, not just to reaching the region.
- Explore before finishing the area: It’s a smart idea to thoroughly search the Coastal Jungle before wrapping up the main quest Revenge is Best Served Cold.
- Watch for the quest transition: After this, you’ll head toward the Foothills and start Needle in a Haystack, which naturally leads you into farming content.
- Ancient Farms are worth your attention: These spots can give you Fertile Soil, Cane Sugar, and Corn, making them one of your first important farming locations.
Fertile Soil and Seeds
Once farming in Windrose is unlocked, your next job is to get the two basics: Fertile Soil and Seeds. Without soil, you can’t build a Seedbed, and without a Seedbed, most crops are off the table.

Where to find Fertile Soil:
- Search the Foothills and Cursed Swamps
- Check ruins with small soil beds
- Visit Ancient Farms for the most reliable source
- Mine the soil with your pickaxe
- Bring back plenty, because each seedbed square costs 5 Fertile Soil
Your first real soil run usually means sailing out on purpose rather than just collecting it by accident. The good news is that Fertile Soil isn’t especially rare. A few good stops at Ancient Farms can already give you enough to get started.
How to get Seeds:
- Harvest plants and flowers
- Chop down trees like banana, palm, or ficus
- Keep gathering natural resources, because seeds can drop while doing it
How to Build Seedbeds
Once you have Fertile Soil and a few Seeds, you can finally start building your farm. The Seedbed is the foundation for most crops in Windrose, making it the place where farming becomes a proper long-term resource loop.

How to place a Seedbed:
- Press B to open the Building Menu.
- Go to the Farming tab.
- Select the Seedbed.
- Place it on your plot for 5 Fertile Soil.
- Open the Farming tab again and choose what you want to plant.
Each Seedbed has room for four seeds or saplings, one in every corner.
Important placement tips:
- Place Seedbeds fully above the ground
- If part of a bed is covered by sand, you may lose planting spots
- Keep your beds close together for easier harvesting
- Don’t spread them too far across your plot unless you really need the space
Planting and Harvesting
Once your Seedbed in Windrose is ready and you have seeds in your inventory, farming is very simple. Windrose keeps things refreshingly low-maintenance. You don’t need to water crops, monitor sunlight, or manage soil quality. You plant them, leave them alone, and come back later for the reward.

How planting works:
- Press B to open the Building Panel.
- Go to the Farming tab.
- Select the seedling you want to plant.
- Left-click on the Seedbed to place it.
- Wait until it matures, then walk up and press E to harvest.
What to expect:
- Crops grow automatically over time
- There is no watering or upkeep system
- Growth takes about 70 minutes in real time
- You can track progress through visible growth stages
- There is no in-game timer, so checking the time yourself helps
- Most crops need a Seedbed
- Shrubs, Ficus, and Palms can be planted directly on the ground
When you harvest, you get the crop resource and some of your seeds back. That makes farming a steady loop once your setup is running. You’ll still want to gather from the world from time to time, but after a while, your farm can handle a big part of your material needs on its own.
All Plantable Crops
Windrose currently divides farmable plants into two categories. Some require a Seedbed, while others can be planted directly on the ground. Knowing the difference makes farm planning much easier and helps you avoid wasting space.

Seedbed Plants
These crops must be planted in a Seedbed:
- Peppers for cooking and crafting
- Batata as a food resource
- Bean as a food resource
- Leek as a food resource
- Tomato for cooking
- Corn for food and crafting
- Flax for fabric production
- Cocoplum as a food resource
Flax is especially important in Windrose because it’s the only crop on this list that goes directly into fabric production. If you want to craft gear more efficiently, this should be one of your farming priorities.
Ground Plants
These can be placed anywhere on your plot:
- Shrub
- Ficus
- Palm
They are useful for providing extra resources and also give your farm a more natural look.
Where to find some key seeds
- Cayenne Pepper Seeds in the Coastal Jungle
- Sweet Potato Seeds in the Coastal Jungle
- Aloe, Tomato, Corn, and Flax Seeds in the Foothills
- Banana Seeds in both the Coastal Jungle and Foothills
Since Windrose is still in Early Access, this crop list may expand over time. For now, though, these are the main plants to build your farm around.
The Best Seeds/Crops
If you build only one proper farm early on, make it a Flax farm. Flax should be your top priority in Windrose because it yields Flax Fiber, which can be turned into Linen Fabric at the Spinning Wheel. Linen Fabric is needed for many important crafting tasks, from armor to boarding gear to better ships.

Wild Flax does exist, but relying on it alone is a bad deal. It only appears from the Foothills onward, and even though each cluster yields a decent amount, your crafting needs quickly outgrow what casual gathering can cover. A good starting goal is 15 to 20 Flax Saplings, then harvest and replant them whenever you return home.
What to prioritize:
- Flax first: Best choice for long-term crafting progress
- Food crops second: Pick these based on what recipes you actually use
- Grow for your build: If you need stamina or specific food buffs, farm the ingredients you’re missing most
There is no perfect second crop for every player. After Flax, the best choice depends on your cooking needs. Check which recipes you rely on most, then use your remaining Seedbeds to fill those gaps.
Let an NPC Handle the Farm
Once you reach Tortuga, farming becomes much easier. Here, you can unlock the Farming Contractor, an NPC who takes over crop production for you. Instead of planting and harvesting everything by hand, you can let this worker handle full farming jobs, even while you’re offline.

How to unlock the Farming Contractor:
- Reach Tortuga in the mid-game
- Visit the Recruitment Vendor
- Buy the contractor for 10 gold coins
- Place the NPC at your base
How the Farming Contractor works:
After placing the contractor at your base, interact with the farming bench to assign a crop job.
For each job, you need:
- 50 seeds of the crop you want
- 20 silver coins
After about 8 hours, return to the farming bench to collect the results. You’ll get your 50 seeds back and receive a large portion of the crop grown for you.
Why the Farming Contractor is so useful:
- Works while you’re offline
- Saves you from repeated manual farming
- Doesn’t interrupt the crops in your own Seedbeds
- Helps you build up resources with very little effort
If you want a steady supply of materials in Windrose without constantly checking your farm, the Farming Contractor is easily one of the best upgrades available.
Enhance Your Farming Setup with PLITCH!
If you want to make farming more efficient, PLITCH’s Windrose cheats can take a lot of the busywork out of the process. The most useful codes are Faster Movement Speed, Faster Ship Speed, and Fly/Hover Mode, which help you reach Ancient Farms, ruins, and other resource spots much faster. That is especially handy when you’re hunting for Fertile Soil, seeds, or rare materials to expand your farm.
Free Item Use (Build & Craft) is another great fit for this part of the game because it makes setting up Seedbeds and growing your farm much less resource-intensive. If you want to stock up even faster, Set Item Amount (hovered in inventory) can also help manage materials you already collected.
On top of that, Unlimited Stamina and Godmode make longer gathering trips far more relaxed, especially when you want to explore dangerous areas without interruptions. This way, you can focus more on building the farm you want instead of grinding every step.
