Crowns can be surprisingly difficult to find in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Repairs, crafting, and gear upgrades quickly deplete your funds. Our The Witcher 3 Money Guide reveals the best methods to earn crowns quickly, from quests and treasure hunting to smart trading tricks.

Complete Main Quests and Witcher Contracts

The most natural way to make money in The Witcher 3 is by completing quests. Since you progress through the story anyway, this method requires no extra effort. Side quests and Witcher contracts usually reward several hundred crowns, and main quests sometimes pay even more depending on the situation.

But there’s an extra trick many overlook: always negotiate your contract rewards. Before accepting a Witcher contract, Geralt can negotiate the payment. This simple dialogue option boosts your profit without extra effort.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Increase the price gradually
  • Don’t push too far or the client may refuse
  • Most negotiations increase rewards by 20 to 40%

Loot Everything and Sell It

Looting is one of the most dependable ways to make money in The Witcher 3. While exploring ruins, caves, and abandoned villages, you’ll regularly find valuable items.

The most valuable loot includes:

  • Relic weapons
  • Bandit gear
  • Jewelry
  • Runestones and glyphs
  • Monster trophies

Sell Items to the Right Merchants

Weapons and armor become especially profitable when sold to the right merchants. Not all merchants offer the same prices. Each specializes in certain types of goods. Selling items to the right buyer makes a big difference.

Use this rule of thumb:

  • Blacksmiths buy weapons
  • Armorers buy armor
  • Herbalists buy herbs and alchemy ingredients
  • Merchants buy jewelry and miscellaneous items

If a merchant runs out of money, just meditate for 24 hours. Their inventory and crowns will reset.

One reliable merchant early in the game is the armorer at Hierarch Square in Novigrad. He usually has a large stock of crowns. Later in the game, merchants in Toussaint often offer better prices for gear. If you own the Blood and Wine expansion, selling gear there can be be very profitable.

Explore Smuggler Caches in Skellige

Once you reach Skellige, a highly profitable activity becomes accessible. The waters surrounding the islands are filled with smuggler caches and hidden treasures. These underwater deposits often hold valuable equipment and jewelry.

Typical loot includes:

  • Relic weapons
  • Armor pieces
  • Rare crafting materials
  • Expensive valuables

Many of these items sell for hundreds of crowns each.

To farm these treasures efficiently:

  1. Use boats for fast travel between question marks
  2. Loot several caches before returning to shore
  3. Sell everything in Novigrad or Toussaint

Destroy Monster Nests

Monster nests can be found all over the world. They are useful for clearing dangerous areas and for earning money. After defeating the monsters, destroy the nest with a bomb. Then search the area carefully.

You’ll often find:

  • Monster mutagens
  • Rare crafting materials
  • Valuable items

These materials sell well or can be used in alchemy recipes.

Make Money Through Fistfights

The Fists of Fury questline guides Geralt through various fistfighting tournaments across the world. These matches are quick and unexpectedly lucrative. You earn crowns by betting before the fight starts. The larger the bet, the bigger the reward.

Two men in medieval clothing face each other on a forest path, one with a clenched fist and the other with a raised hand.

When starting out:

  • Practice blocking and dodging
  • Avoid betting high amounts immediately

Once you grasp the combat rhythm, fistfights become an easy way to earn extra crowns.

Win Horse Races

Horse racing is another optional activity that offers both money and useful equipment as rewards. Geralt is already a skilled rider, and Roach rarely lets him down.

Winning races grants:

  • Crowns
  • Better saddles
  • Improved saddlebags
  • Horse equipment upgrades

Better saddlebags increase your inventory space. More inventory means more loot, which in turn leads to more money over time. A particularly valuable race series is held at Crow’s Perch.

Play Gwent for Crowns

The card game Gwent provides a relaxing break from monster hunting and can also earn you a steady stream of crowns. Many innkeepers and merchants are willing to play for money.

The bets are usually small, but the matches go quickly. Winning also gives you new cards, which enhance your deck and make future matches easier. Participating in Gwent tournaments can be especially profitable if you have a strong deck.

Exchange Foreign Currency

While exploring the world, you’ll sometimes find Orens and Florens. These currencies can’t be used in shops; instead, they must be exchanged for crowns. You can do this at Vivaldi Bank in Novigrad, located on Hierarch Square.

A man in armor stands in front of a counter window where a person is seated, inside a dark, medieval-style room.

The exchange rates are simple:

  • 1 Oren equals 1 crown
  • 3 Florens equal 1 crown

Whenever you visit Novigrad, trade these coins so they don’t clutter your inventory.

Early Game Trick: Dismantle Shells for Pearls

One simple trick can help you earn quick money early in the game. Some merchants sell seashells and conch shells at a low price. When a craftsman dismantles them, they can produce pearls or black pearls.

These pearls fetch much higher prices than the shells themselves. This trick is most effective early in the game, when every crown matters.
