Prove your skills in ancient China during the Ming Dynasty. Our WUCHANG Fallen Feathers tips and tricks show you how the combat system works, how to escape the Madness, and what you need to remember about skills and equipment. We also provide useful information about the weapons in the game.

1) WUCHANG Fallen Feathers tips for the skill tree

The skill tree in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers is divided into six areas and can be found in the Impetus Repository. At first, you won’t see which skills are in the branches, but there’s a trick to avoid wasting skill points and quickly reveal which abilities are hidden at the end of each branch.

Gather about ten red mercury essences, then fully unlock the skills of one branch. Make note of the unlocked abilities, then reset everything. Next, move on to the second branch, then the third, and so on. Since resets are free, you won’t lose any essence with this method, allowing you to better evaluate which branch suits your play style best.

2) Weapon and combat tips

  • There are five distinct weapon classes in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, with more than 25 weapons.
  • Every weapon has its own strengths and style.
  • Dual blades provide high mobility, axes offer strong defense, and long swords are effective for parrying.
  • Each weapon features its own skill tree for customizations and enhancements.
  • Combine your weapons, spells, techniques, accessories, and outfits to create a unique style.
  • You can equip two weapons at the same time.
  • From an elegant and precise fighting style to raw force, anything is possible. The key is to decide and adjust your skills accordingly.
  • One-handed swords are an excellent addition to a mage build.
  • An enemy made of wood is vulnerable to fire damage.
  • If an enemy is more metallic in nature, lightning damage is particularly effective.

3) Temper your weapons

After defeating the first major boss in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, the man-eating Dhutanga, you’ll unlock a new game mechanic: Tempering your weapons. This enables you to deal more damage and trigger certain status effects. To activate it, visit a shrine and open the tempering menu. There, you insert Bone Needles into the designated slots to choose the type and effect of the enhancement.

To activate the tempering, you need the item Temperance. This item visually resembles Wuchang’s deformed arm. Initially, you start with a fire bonus available. You’ll find more Bone Needles with different effects later in the Impetus Repository. However, keep in mind that Temperance can only be used once per rest. It’s best to save this powerful buff for particularly tough battles or challenging waves of enemies.

4) Customize your equipment

Every element of your armor influences your battle abilities in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers. Additionally, you can build up resistances and vulnerabilities through the right pieces. So, watch the damage type being dealt in your current location or during the next boss fight, and adjust your armor to develop a resistance against it.

Resistances include, for example:

  • Slash
  • Corruption
  • Tenacity
  • Paralysis
  • Fire
  • Frostbite
  • Feathering
  • Blight

5) Keep an eye on your madness

Madness is the main driving force for the protagonist. That’s why this mechanic is essential in our WUCHANG Fallen Feathers tips and tricks. It functions like a traditional risk-reward system. The higher your madness level, the more red mercury you lose upon death. When your madness reaches its maximum, you deal significantly more damage but also take much more damage yourself.

The biggest catch: If you die with full madness, a particularly tough enemy will appear at your death location. Defeating it will restore your lost mercury and reset your madness to zero. But if you lose the fight, your collected mercury is gone forever.

To reduce your madness in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, you must sacrifice an artifact at a shrine within the game world. Depending on the item used, your madness will be fully or partially lowered. The items are usually consumed during the process.

But which is better? A high or low madness level? The latter has the advantage that you don’t lose everything immediately upon death. So you can die, then level up at a shrine, and then retrieve the lost mercury from the place where you died. Unless you die again, of course. Then the mercury is gone.

On the other hand, high madness grants access to powerful buffs and abilities in the skill tree. How you balance risk and reward is entirely your choice. If you’re safety-conscious, it’s best to keep madness low, but if you’re a risk taker, you can safely increase it.

6) Reveal hidden enemies

Because of the color scheme in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, enemies can blend into the environment easily and become hard to see. This can result in unexpected surprise attacks.

To prevent issues, we suggest using the Lock-On function as often as possible when entering new areas. It has a wide radius, so it will highlight hidden enemies even if they are a few meters away and not in your line of sight.

7) Familiarize yourself with the terminology

WUCHANG Fallen Feathers throws a whole bunch of new terms at you right from the start. Most of these are essentially just renamed concepts you already know from many other games. The clearest example is red mercury, which functions as both currency and experience points. It’s similar to the souls in Dark Souls or the runes in Elden Ring.

But other mechanics also have their own names. For example, “shimmer” refers to dodging, and “feathering” indicates the amount of damage caused by certain spells.

Many terms may initially seem overwhelming. Luckily, there’s a dedicated section for game terminology in the menu under the Tutorial tab. We suggest reading this section after about an hour of play. Doing so will make it easier to understand all the new terms and help you keep track of everything.

8) Learn to dodge

Mastering the so-called shimmer dodge is crucial for your survival in WUCHANG Fallen Feathers. Instead of relying on parries, the game emphasizes precise and well-timed dodges. You might recognize this mechanic from games like Black Myth: Wukong, which is also set in Asia.

If you perform a perfect dodge at the last moment, it is indicated by a distinctive sound and a blue aura around Wuchang. This aura later shifts to pink. With each successful shimmer maneuver, you gather a charge of Heavenly Power. This resource can be used for powerful abilities, weapon changes, or spells.

Some enemies also have a so-called Obliterate bar. This appears as a small circle when you attack them. Once the circle is full, a Chinese character shows up on the enemy, indicating they are stunned. At this point, you can deal significant damage with an attack.

9) Stop by the donation box

Our final tip is about the donation box in the Reverent Temple. This is where important items that you didn’t pick up during your travels end up. So, it’s worth checking there from time to time. Sometimes you’ll find items you overlooked that are actually very useful. The good thing is that these items are automatically added to the box periodically.
