Explore the continent of Calradia, and build and expand your kingdom in the strategy action RPG Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. In the following article, you’ll find important Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord tips on how to best proceed and prevail against your enemies with the help of your companions.

1) Recruit soldiers

Especially at the beginning of Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, you’ll have a hard time finding your way alone. Even the easiest quests are the most challenging when you’re alone.

That’s why you should take care of recruiting soldiers from the very beginning to progress faster and more effectively. Having at least 20 soldiers in your ranks will help you fend off bandits and raiders near settlements and towns.

You can find potential reinforcements by visiting all possible towns in your area and recruiting new soldiers. Particularly strong followers can be found in the tavern in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. If you equip them with powerful weapons, they will be especially helpful.

To compensate for the reduced movement speed that comes with more troops, you should make sure that each of your soldiers has a horse so that they can move much faster. Also, make sure your troops have enough food to keep their morale up.

2) Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord tips: Avoid fights and dangers

Especially if you are just starting out in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, you should definitely avoid possible dangers and fights. Also, when it comes to quests that you can accept in towns, you should always think twice before accepting them.

For example, quests like clearing villages of poachers aren’t easy to do and are very dangerous, especially at the beginning. They have a lot of very good archers in their ranks, and you’re usually powerless against them with your initial low troop strength.

Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord tips: Avoid fights and dangers

In addition, many quests in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord have time limits or long distances, which increases the difficulty significantly. If you’re planning on attacking bandits or looters, it’s a good idea to observe them before you attack to get an idea of their strength and potential danger.

You’ll also be able to see how fast their troops move and what their composition is. This will help you decide whether to attack or wait.

3) Combat tips

The most effective way to fight is to learn tactics and options from the start. At first, they may seem difficult to understand and complicated, but later in the game they will give you enormous advantages and make it much easier for you to win different battles.

You can use the number keys to switch between infantry, cavalry, and long-range fighters, and the function keys F1 – F12 to give tactical orders to your troops and units.

One of the most effective methods of combat in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord is to lance while on horseback. The speed of the galloping horse greatly increases your attack. If you use the Couched Lance attack, all you have to do is lunge, and you’ll still do a lot of damage to crowds of enemies because of the amplification.

Horses are still very useful if you’re always chasing enemies. They allow you to move your troops much faster over long distances and catch up with enemy units easily. You can see your current movement speed on the bottom right of the map.

Another very useful and effective strategy is especially recommended for 1-on-1 situations in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. Approach your opponent with more caution and wait patiently for him to make his first move. It’s important that you don’t attack first. As soon as your opponent attacks you, don’t immediately start your counterattack, but block or dodge it with a sideways step.

Instead of starting an attack now, you’ll circle your enemy and won’t get attacked again because the AI can’t turn fast enough. Once you’re behind the enemy, land a blow or two while continuing to dodge with a sideways step.

This particularly effective melee tactic will allow you to win even duels against supposedly stronger opponents. However, as more enemy soldiers appear, this method is no longer possible, as you are now likely to be attacked from all sides, including behind.

4) The best companions in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

To progress in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord quickly and effectively, you should always hire new companions, especially soldiers. You can find your future allies in the taverns of the towns. Some of them can be won over to your side for as little as 1,000 Denars. They will provide you with some very useful benefits and have various skills that can be developed.

Once you’ve acquired a new companion for your clan, it will take on a role based on its strongest skill. Scouting, Engineering, Administration, and Medicine are some of the most valuable and fundamental skills for your faction. At the beginning of the game, you should hire companions with the best skills in these areas.

You can also arm your companions to use them on the battlefield. Clan members can also do quests for you, so you don’t have to worry about them and have more time for other things.

From clan level 3, you will also be able to give your soldiers a unit of troops to lead on their own. This is extremely helpful in various conquest missions, but also in defending against enemy attacks.

When choosing your new companions, you should always consider which part of your army has potential for improvement, and then hire those with the appropriate skills for optimal improvement.

The names of your companions will give you a clue as to their most distinctive abilities. For example, the surname Breakskull or Coalbiter indicates a talented fighter. They have no other positive effect on your army.

The most useful surnames for your army are Willowbark or The Healer, which are healers. They have a Medicine value of 60 and will reduce the number of dead soldiers in your ranks during various conflicts with enemy fighters. Their abilities also allow them to recover from injuries more quickly.

Rogues have the surnames Longknife and Accursed. Their 60 Rogue rating allows them to quickly raid villages, infiltrate castles, and bribe guards.
